ISB Accreditation Visit

As you may be aware, ISB works with outside agencies to obtain Accreditation.  Basically, these agencies have created indicators which exemplify school quality and they judge schools against these indicators.  If they judge you to be proficient, you then obtain Accreditation, which helps families to know that they are enrolling in a wonderful school when they choose to attend ISB.  If you want to know more about this process, you can read about it on Dragons Gate (http://ift.tt/2fyd6F9).

As part of this process, we will have a team of 16 people visit ISB from November 4th - 11th to renew our school's accreditation.  These visitors will be reading the reports that have been created by our school committees and conducting interviews with various community members.  You may also see these visitors in your classrooms throughout the week at various times.  Please feel free to say hello throughout the week, and help to make our visiting team feel welcome while they are on campus.

The Visiting Team will have their office space in rooms 1226, 1227 and 1228 in the MS/HS Library while they are on campus.  Please note that these rooms will not be available for student use from Thursday, November 3rd to Friday, November 11th.

Strength and Conditioning Stuff You Should Read: 10/31/16

“At the Crossroad of American Policing” — Chief Art Acevedo

“We have got to raise our game, You are commanders. If you don’t like it, you can move on, or you can demote. I’m not going to hold that against anybody if it’s not for you, but we have got to step up… We are in the crossroad of American policing and the problem isn’t cops, it’s leadership!”Chief Acevedo to his command staff after two questionable uses of force by Austin, TX police officers.

images-4In a secretly-recorded tape, Chief Art Acevedo of Austin, TX calls his command staff on the carpet after two incidents of police use of police force occurred.

These are difficult times for police chiefs. On one hand, they need to be the leader of the department. On the other hand (and an equally important one) they must represent the community and their interests. When the interests of rank and file officers or those of the community are seen not to be addressed, problems follow.

The one thing I learned as a chief was to be aware of BOTH interest groups. BOTH matter. At the same time, most our nation’s police chief in larger cities report to the political head of the city — the mayor — who is also cognizant of these and many other interest groups.

I learned that changing police takes time; time that must be filled with passion AND patience. Hear what Chief Acevedo had to say to his top commanders. Was this the best approach? What else could he have done?

Tony Plohetski of the Austin American-Statesman wrote on October 20, 2016:

“After two of the most controversial police use-of-force encounters in his tenure, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo stood before an assembly of high-ranking officers tasked with carrying out his vision for the department, using raw and emotional language to express his frustration in a private meeting.

“In each instance — the shooting of an unarmed teen and the violent arrest of a teacher — Acevedo, one of the nation’s most tenured major city chiefs, had swiftly and publicly condemned the actions of officers, a decision that led some inside the department to question how much Acevedo supports his troops.

“In a profanity-laden tirade behind closed doors with his top brass, Acevedo questioned how anyone, much less one of his 18 commanders, could have disagreed with his assessment and desire to hold the officers responsible. He acknowledged the department had “taken a step back” and called upon them to push changes down to the rank-and-file — or to rethink their careers.

“’We have got to raise our game,’ Acevedo said in the August 10 meeting. ‘You are commanders. If you don’t like it, you can move on, or you can demote. I’m not going to hold that against anybody if it’s not for you, but we have got to step up.'”

One incident involved a traffic stop of an African-American schoolteacher, Breaion King, which resembled the aggressive arrest of Sandra Bland earlier this year by a Texas highway patrol officer and the fatal shooting of an emotionally distraught young African-American teen, David Joseph, who was running naked down a street.

Commenting on the public release of his comments that were secretly recorder by one of his commanders, Acevedo said, “This person that did this, did me a personal favor because I think it confirms to this community that I walk the talk whether the light’s on or the light’s turned off, whether it’s outside in public or behind closed doors.”

You can see the use of force videos and hear excerpts from the command staff meeting which were put together by the Austin American-Statesman HERE.

5 Spine-Sparing Strength and Conditioning Program Strategies

In his book, Back Mechanic, Dr. Stuart McGill frequently uses the term "spine hygiene" to describe how individuals position themselves during various everyday and athletic tasks to manage their back pain. Most of the strategies speak to the positional side of things, but I thought it might be worthwhile to take a look at some strength and conditioning program strategies you can employ to keep the spine healthy over the long haul.

1. Don’t pick up heavy dumbbells.

The stronger you get, the bigger a pain it is to pick up and position dumbbells, whether it's for rows, presses, or single-leg work. Things are even harder when the heaviest dumbbells are positioned on the lowest tiers of the dumbbell rack. We've been brainwashed for years that dumbbells are more spine-friendly than barbells, but this simply isn't always true. Being able to unrack a weight from chest height and not having to swing it into position can be invaluable once you're developed an appreciable level of strength. I'm not saying not to use heavy dumbbells, but rather to be very careful with this approach if you're someone who has dealt with low back pain.

2. Cycle in heavy bilateral loading.

Make no mistake about it: a barbell will allow you to move the most weight in your program on the overwhelming majority of exercises. Unfortunately, this also means that the compressive and shear forces on your spine will generally be highest with barbell exercises. That doesn't mean that you need to eliminate them, but rather that you need to cycle them out periodically to give you a little break. At the peak of my powerlifting career, I'd always stay away from squats, deadlifts, and good mornings for the first 10-14 days after a meet. It was all lower intensity work, anyway, so plenty of single-leg work and glute-ham raises was a perfect fit.

600x2DL

3. If you are going to do both in the same session, squat before you deadlift.

There are many theories as to why deadlifting is so much more exhausting both systemically and locally, but regardless of the one to which you subscribe, you'll surely recognize that heavy pulling before squatting is a recipe for a cranky back. After all, there is a reason you always squat first and deadlift last in every powerlifting. A few of my favorite approaches in terms of sequencing are:

a. Squat heavy, deadlift for reps
b. Squat heavy, deadlift for speed
c. Squat for speed, deadlift heavy
d. Squat for speed, deadlift for reps

Occasionally, you can dabble in some speed deadlifts before you squat, but once you've reached a solid level of strength, I think you'll find that it still just doesn't work out all that well.

4. Don't train in a fatigued state if you don't move well.

Experienced lifters with great core control can usually get away with training through fatigue as long as the training loads aren't outrageous. Interestingly, though, if you look at the typical recreational runner with back pain, it usually starts after they've already been running for a while. Fatigue changes the game, as they start to substitute lumbar extension (low back movement) for hip extension.

This doesn't just underscore the importance of gradual return to running progressions; rather, it reminds us that those with a history of low back pain need to spend a lot of time training with perfect technique in non-fatigued states. As McGill has discussed, they're better off doing multiple sets of shorter prone and side bridges than they are trying to hold one set for 60 seconds.

Back-Mechanic

Over time, these good positions because second nature and accepted as the norm "subconscious awareness." Every second the individual spends in a bad position, though - either because of poor positional awareness or an inability to overcome fatigue - is a step in the wrong direction.

5. Go to split-stance.

Just as single-leg lower body work can be much more spine friendly than bilateral work, simply going to a split-stance on other exercises can be helpful for minimizing unwanted spine movement, too. As an example, we always teach our wall slide variations with a split-stance, and you'll also see this approach integrated with rowing and landmine press technique, too.

Cressey wall slide

Wrap-up

These are obviously only a few of seemingly countless ways to keep your lower back healthy in a strength and conditioning program, so I'd love to hear some of your suggestions in the comments section below!

Possible traffic delays this evening

In recent days, and especially yesterday, we’ve encountered significant delays at the Exhibition Centre due to weather and an ongoing security exhibition which finishes today. For the majority of buses this is not a concern, but for buses that travel through East Shunyi and Sunhe areas please note that there is the potential for delay this afternoon and evening.

We’ll attempt to redirect as many buses as we can away from this area, and also inform parents by telephone or SMS of any bus that is delayed by more than 30 minutes.

Improved Searching And Filtering In Magnet AXIOM

One feature enhancement in Magnet AXIOM that IEF users will appreciate is improvements in searching and filtering. In AXIOM, we’ve made searching and filtering almost instant. You can stack filters to help narrow your search criteria and swap out any that no longer apply or aren’t needed. Searching and filtering in IEF allowed for a lot of customization, but it was generally slower to search through all the evidence recovered. AXIOM definitely speeds this up and creates a more intuitive flow for layered searches and filters.

Chief: Cast a Bold, Breathtaking Vision

casting-visionJohn Kotter, a leading business consultant on organizational change identifies eight major errors as to why transformation in an organization fails. They are worth remembering as police in America are faced with making some big, transformational changes if they are to restore the trust that is so necessary to have been police and citizens in a democracy such as ours. I would to focus today on the third error: Lacking a Vision.

But first let’s take a look at the other seven errors:

1. Not establishing a great enough sense of urgency.
2. Not creating a powerful enough guiding coalition.
3. LACKING A VISION.
4. Under-communicating the vision by a factor of ten.
5. Not removing obstacles to the new vision.
6. Not systematically planning for, and creating, short-term wins.
7. Declaring victory too soon.
8. Not anchoring changes in the [organization’s] culture.

These eight errors are very consistent with my experience in leading organizational transformation. (It’s always good when one’s experience dovetails with research!)

Kotter says this about step three — vision — and the topic of today’s post.

“Without a sensible vision, a transformation effort can easily dissolve into a list of confusing and incompatible projects that can take the organization in the wrong direction or nowhere at all. Without a sound vision [any new project or program] will not add up in a meaningful way. In failed transformations, you often find plenty of plans, directives and programs but no vision…

“In a few of the less successful cases that I have seen, management had a sense of direction, but it was too complicated or blurry to be useful… A useful rule of thumb: If you can’t communicate the vision to someone in five minutes or less and get a reaction that signifies both understanding and interest, you are not yet done with this phase of the transformation process.”

[From “Leading Change: Why Transformation Efforts Fail,” John Kotter in HBR’s 10 Must Reads On Change Management. Harvard Business School Publishing Corp., 2011.]

In Arrested Development, I also tackle the importance of vision-casting. For me, it was the first step in the transformational process. Although I would concede that Kotter’s list which included creating a sense of urgency and having a powerful coalition go before casting the actual vision.

Step One: Envision: Police leaders must cast a bold and breathtaking vision to ensure a distinguished future for policing.

A GOOD VISION statement should be short, bold (even
breathtaking), and those hearing it for the first time should be able to clearly remember it the next day.

One quickly learns, however, that this is the easiest step. In order for a vision to work, it must be shared with others whom it affects. But having something shared with you is much different than having your vision become theirs.

druckerFor leaders to have their visions become owned by others takes time and commitment. They must also have passion and persistence. Peter Drucker, one of our nation’s most influential thinkers on the subject of management theory, once described these kind of leaders as monomaniacs with a mission.

Like most chiefs new to a department, I came with a vision that was, at first, a set of expectations as to how I wanted the men and women of my department to conduct the business of policing. These expectations came about through my own learning and experience—the things I thought important.

From day one as a chief, I began to describe my expectations for the department at every opportunity. I was in the business of selling organizational change.

I found that one of the top opportunities to do this was at the graduation of a class of new police officers. This was always a big event in Madison. I wanted my new officers to know who I was and what my expectations were—but most of all, how passionate I was about
them.

“Employ your full skill at all times and to all persons.
Prevent, manage, or intervene in situations requiring
police service.

“Be open, accept change in this changing world, develop and maintain a broad perspective of your function and the society in which you work, be flexible and develop the ability to grow with the people you serve.”
[Police Recruit Graduation, 1974.]

But before my expectations became the driving vision for the Madison department, there was a lot of work that first needed to be done…

First, police leaders are needed who are not only monomaniacs with a mission, but who are willing to stay around long enough and to suffer through the pain that inevitably comes with an organization in the process of change.

Second, there needs to be constant and on-going support by the community including elected officials—those outside the organization—to help make the vision a reality. Leaders must cast their vision outside the department as much as they do inside of it.

Third, those within the organization must know their leader is willing to engage in a process with them to develop the vision. They, too, must be willing to participate in the work to make the vision become a reality and do all that they can to operate under its direction…

Looking back, I think I would have cast a vision statement that was even stronger and bolder: “We will become the best police department in America.” Deep-down, that is what I was after. We, in the Madison would lead and become the best police department in our nation. We would share what we learned and how we did it with others.

  • What’s your organization’s bold and breathtaking vision?

Malware Can Hide, But It Must Run

It’s October, haunting season. However, in the forensics world, the hunting of evil never ends. And with Windows 10 expected to be the new normal, digital forensics and incident response (DFIR) professionals who lack the necessary (memory) hunting skills will pay the price. Investigators who do not look at volatile memory are leaving evidence at the crime scene. RAM content holds evidence of user actions, as well as evil processes and furtive behaviors implemented by malicious code. It is this evidence that often proves to be the smoking gun that unravels the story of what happened on a system. Although Microsoft is not expected to reach its Windows 10 rollout goal of one billion devices in the next two years, their glossiest OS to date currently makes up 22% of desktop systems according to netmarketshare.com. Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Sauna use for a healthy lifestyle

With the Holiday season just around the corner, it can be difficult to stay fit for the holidays when you want to bake with the grand kids or attend your friend’s annual Friends giving dinner.

The good news is that media’s claim that people tend to gain 5 pounds around the holidays isn’t true. The average weight gain is actually 1 pound, according to the US National Library of Medicine.

Your Health Mate family understands the importance of enjoying the holidays and maintaining a healthy mind and body. Whether it’s 1 pound or 5, we know the importance of maintaining your health and fitness routine, all year round.

Our top 5 natural tips to stay fit for the holidays!

1. Embrace the staycation

If you find yourself indoors to keep out the cold or you can’t bring yourself to drive to the gym, there are still ways you can keep moving! YouTube offers numerous fitness videos for free, such as Yoga With Adrienne. There are even apps that give you structured workouts like Nike Training Club and you can track your performance on the go or in the comfort of your own home.

2. Hydrate!

You’ll hear it over and over but hydration is essential to optimum health. According to the Institute of Medicine, about 75% of the American population suffer from chronic dehydration. So remember to get your daily dose of water and stay rejuvenated!

3. Fun holiday activities

Sign up for a fun holiday activity like the local turkey trot to stay motivated throughout the holiday season. Invite some family along and inspire each other on your wellness journeys!

4. Make holiday errands a workout

Have a long list of shopping or errands to get through this season? Go to your local outlet or shopping mall and slip on your comfy workout shoes. There’s nothing better than keeping your body fit and finishing your to do list at the same time.

5. Infrared sauna heat therapy

Paired with a healthy diet and exercise routine, infrared heat will increase detoxification and burn anywhere from 400-600 calories in just one 30 minute session. With a warm and relaxing infrared sauna session, you’ll gain a positive mood and help burn some extra weight lingering from holiday treats. View our infrared heat saunas to see which Sauna is meant for you!

We hope these natural tips will guide you on your health and fitness journey this holiday season and savor the special moments (and treats) that the holidays have to offer.

Nut-Free Pumpkin Crumb Muffins

My Nut-Free Pumpkin Crumb Muffins are the perfect fall treat. Made with coconut flour and healing fall spices, you can serve these paleo muffins at brunch with my world famous caffeine-free Dandelion Coffee, or for dessert on a chilly fall evening. I love all things pumpkin so much that I bake these year round!

Nut-Free Pumpkin Crumb Muffins are super easy to make. The base has 7 ingredients and calls for canned pumpkin, so you won’t need to take the time to roast your own pumpkin, making it possible to whip these up in a few minutes. The topping has 4 healthy ingredients and is also incredibly simple.

It’s funny, I see so many recipes, paleo and otherwise, that have long ingredient lists. If you make these amazing muffins you’ll understand that it doesn’t take many ingredients on my end, and much time on yours, to create a flavorful healthy recipe!

Nut-Free Pumpkin Crumb Muffins

    Ingredients

    Topping
    Instructions
    1. In a food processor, combine eggs, pumpkin, and coconut sugar
    2. Pulse in coconut flour, salt, baking soda, and pumpkin pie spice until well combined
    3. Divide batter between 8 paper lined muffin cups
    4. Rinse out food processor
    5. In a food processor, combine shortening and coconut sugar
    6. Pulse in coconut flour and cinnamon
    7. Sprinkle topping over cupcake batter
    8. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes
    9. Cool 1 hour
    10. Serve

Since this Nut-Free Pumpkin Crumb Muffins recipe is made of coconut flour, proper storage is a good idea. I leave these out to cool overnight, then wrap them in a paper towel and zip them into a plastic bag and place them in the fridge. When I don’t want to go the plastic bag route, I store them in the fridge in a sealed pyrex container. Either way, they’ll keep for around 4 days.

This is a healthy low-carb muffin recipe. Typical muffin recipes are made of wheat flour which is higher in carbohydrates than coconut flour, and often contain 1-2 cups of white sugar. If you are looking for low-carb recipes that are also high in fat, or LCHF recipes, check out my Keto Diet page.

Here are some of my other nut-free paleo recipes:
