3 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Whirlpool Tub
Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com
Are you buying your first whirlpool bathtub? Let us help you narrow down the choices. Start by asking yourself the following questions:
Will it fit in the bathroom?
Make sure to measure your bathroom before you even look at a whirlpool, including any space you might gain taking down dividing walls or showers. “Most whirlpools come in three standard sizes,” says Morey. “Five feet, five and a half and six. But you can’t just consider the tub size — they’re all designed to be dropped into a deck, and that will take up more space, with the bare minimum adding at least a half-inch to your measurements on all sides.
“If you think you’d like to hold a lot of stuff like candles and oils near the water, you’ll also need extra space on the deck,” says Morey. “If you’re over six feet tall, you may want to forfeit deck space for more tub room.” Source: HGTV
Is your current heating system enough?
If you choose to heat your whirlpool with your existing in-home heating system, make sure it can handle the amount of water needed to fill the whirlpool. With an external system, the water in the tub will get cool quickly due to the circulating jets, so you will need to frequently refill the tub with hot water. A 50 gallon quick recovery system should be sufficient.
The other option is a self-heating system. A self-heating whirlpool comes with its own internal heating system that circulates the tub water and reheats when necessary. This is a good energy-saving option and the best way to keep your water temperature consistent. Source: DoItYourself
Which type of jet should you pick?
Choose between water jets or air jets. Water-jet whirlpool tubs force water through jets, giving more pressure and a forceful massage. In air-jet whirlpool tubs, air is forced through tiny holes for a lighter massage. A combination whirlpool tub uses both, but will be more expensive and may use more energy.
- One drawback of water-jet and combination tubs is that you can’t use bath salts or oils, as these will damage the pumping mechanism.
- Another water-jet and combination tub drawback is that some water stays in the jets, and mold can develop if they’re not regularly cleaned out. Source: WikiHow

Olfactory Trespassing
Perfume, deodorant, laundry detergent, hand lotion, soap, shampoo, dryer sheets, hand sanitizer, potpourri, scented candles, air freshener. What do these products have in common? Artificial fragrance made from endocrine disrupting chemicals.
Olfactory Trespassing
For those of us with autoimmune disorders or Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), the products above can do more than just ruin our day. They can ruin our health.
The Toxicity of Everyday Products
Most of these chemical fragrances contain endocrine disrupting chemicals which may lead to cancer and interfere with immune system function too.
I’m a Hugger
I love hugging people. I’m a hugger! But there’s nothing worse than hugging someone and having the chemical fragrance from their perfume of cologne stay with you all day. It stains my clothes and doesn’t come out in the dry cleaning. The stuff has staying power.
Losing our Sense of Smell is Making us…
All of these scented and perfumed products are so strong that we are losing our sense of smell. It’s like listening to loud music blasting through a speaker. Soon one cannot discern softer sounds.
Lose our Sense of Taste
What is the most integral component of our sense of taste? It’s our sense of smell. If you can’t smell, you basically can’t taste your food. This can lead to food cravings, a lack of satiation, and unsatisfied hunger.
Solutions for Scented Times
The soap provided in most, if not all, of the alternative practitioners’ offices, that I go to is perfumed with artificial fragrance. Even the exercise studios I go to do not provide unscented soap. Because of this, I carry a bottle of hand sanitizer with me.
Traveling Scent Free
When we travel and stay in a rental, I bring my own hand soap, dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, laundry detergent, and cleaning products. This provides my family with a scent free environment.
Why Can’t We Smell Like Humans?
I’m trying to figure out what our cultural obsession is with not smelling like humans –what do you think?
Is Your Home a Scent-Free Zone?
What’s the point of eating all of this organic food while slathering our bodies in layers of chemicals? Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts!

4 Important Tips When Using Essential Oils in Your Bath
Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com
More and more people are falling in love with aromatherapy. It doesn’t just smell good, it also provides health benefits depending on which oil you choose to use. But be careful about putting it in your bath without proper research beforehand, or you might risk burning your skin. Take note of the following tips:
Avoid direct contact with essential oils
“When it comes to putting essential oils in the bath, remember — oil and water don’t mix, which is to say the essential oils are not water soluble,” warns Teachey. Translation: When you climb into the tub, the small drops of oil can adhere to your skin (and tender nether regions!) just as if you’d applied the undiluted oil directly your skin, which can irritate and burn. Ouch!
Use carrier oils
You don’t want essential oils just to sit on top of the water; you want them dispersed throughout. The best way to do that is combine essential oils in a carrier oil first, like coconut, olive, sunflower, or jojoba. “For a single bath, three to 12 drops of essential oil in a tablespoon (15 ml) of carrier oil is sufficient to create a very aromatic, therapeutic bath,” says Teachey, who suggests stirring the bath before climbing in to help circulate oils. Source: GoodHousekeeping
Choose skin-friendly essential oils
As much as we love essential oils, there are some that don’t belong in the tub. Avoid essential oils that can irritate the skin or mucus membranes. On this list: basil, lemongrass, oregano, thyme, nutmeg, peppermint, cinnamon, clove, black pepper, and bay. Source: HelloGlow
Don’t stay for too long
Soaking for just the right amount of time in your luxurious bath will ensure that you get the most benefits from your aromatherapy session.
- You’ll want to soak in your aromatherapy bath for about 15-20 minutes to get the most benefits. Staying in longer can dry out or damage your skin.
- Consider using bath props, such as a pillow or rose petals, to help you relax further.
- A warm washcloth over your eyes will also help you enjoy your bath. Just make sure to warm it in water under the faucet so that you don’t get any essential oil in your eyes. Source: WikiHow

Different Ways to Clean a Porcelain Bathtub
Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com
Chilling in the bath is one of life’s greatest pleasures. But, if your tub is dirty, you might feel stressed instead of relaxed. To ensure its cleanliness, here are some things you can do:
Regular Cleaning Routine
For gentle weekly cleaning, look for store-bought cleansers that are marked “safe for porcelain enamel”, or make your own by mixing a few tablespoons of dishwashing soap with about a gallon of hot water. Use a rag or soft sponge to scrub the porcelain, and then rinse well with water. Source: Home.HowStuffWorks
Removal of Rust
If you have a rust stain (or any other marks or filth that the above techniques can’t touch) you can try this method as a last resort:
- Cover the stain with table salt
- Take half of a lemon and squeeze the juice over the salt
- Scrub the salt/lemon mixture with a clean cloth or a nylon sponge
- If the stain still doesn’t come up, leave the paste-mixture on the stain for an hour or so, then squeeze more lemon juice on the stain and try scrubbing the stain again
- Rinse and wipe clean Source: ApartmentTherapy
Keeping the Tub Shiny
Squeeze lemon oil onto a soft cloth and rub the sides of your bathtub. The lemon oil also forms a protective coating that helps stop water spots, soap scum and minor stains. Avoid rubbing the oil on the bottom of the tub because it can be quite slippery. Source: Hunker
Quick Clean
Need to do a quick tub cleanup before guests arrive? Grab the handiest item — your shampoo! It does a great job on soap scum because it rinses clean. You can use it to buff a shine into your chrome faucets as well. Source: RD

Mid-Week Movement Miscellany
With the launch of my new podcast, I’ve been a bit quiet on the blogging front. However, I’ve got plenty of thoughts rattling around in my brain, so I thought I’d pull together an article on the topic. Heck, we might even make this a regular series. Here goes…
1. On average, female athletes respond differently to eccentric stress than male athletes do.
Last year, I wrote a blog (Making Movement Better: Duct Tape or WD40?) that touched on the fact that many pitchers lose range of motion at the shoulder and elbow as adaptations to the crazy high eccentric stress experienced during pitching. I also was careful to note that not everyone loses range of motion; in fact, some athletes gain motion (become more unstable).
Perhaps unsurprisingly, research in the softball pitching world shows that females don’t lose range-of-motion following softball pitching even though they’re still encountering noteworthy eccentric stress. Females are more likely to be hypermobile, so it makes sense that they become more unstable than they do “tight.” In short, you probably aren’t going to have to work as hard to gain ROM in softball pitchers; your efforts are better directed at regaining neuromuscular control with low-level stabilization exercises.
2. Reaching exercises should drive thoracic flexion and scapular upward rotation, but not necessarily pec recruitment.
On a recent Instagram Q&A, I received the question (paraphrased), “How can I get better scapular contact on the ribs during reaches without too much pec recruitment?” Here was my answer:
3. The best coaching cue for an exercise might just be to do a different exercise.
Also on that Q&A, I got an inquiry about what to do with low back pain due to excessive arching at the bottom of an ab wheel rollout. The answer was pretty simple: regress the exercise; you aren’t ready for ab wheel rollouts.
With anterior core exercises like this, it works a bit like a seesaw: the further the arms go away from the body, the harder the exercise feels (imagine moving a little kid to the end of a seesaw; his weight doesn’t change, but the amount of force at the other end of the seesaw needed to offset him does simply because of his positioning). When an individual dumps into anterior pelvic tilt/lordosis (excessive arching) as the arms get further away from the body on a rollout, it’s one means of shortening that distance. And, it allows the individual to hang out on the passive restraints on the posterior aspect of the spine instead of using active muscular control to create stability.
A better option would be a stir the pot, stability ball rollout (if you don’t go DOWN as far, you don’t go OUT as far), or even just a regular prone bridge. These regressions are easy inclusions that are tremendously helpful when dealing with less trained individuals or athletes with long limbs (and spines).
If you’re looking to learn a bit more about this topic, I’d encourage you to check out my resource, Understanding and Coaching the Anterior Core. This seminar presentation is a thorough tutorial on how to best coach and program these invaluable exercises.

This easy paleo cake recipe is the perfect holiday dessert for Christmas, Hanukkah, Easter, and Passover.

Paleo Orange Cake Recipe
The idea for this easy grain-free cake recipe came from one of my favorite cookbook authors, Claudia Roden. Her recipe is called Gateau a l’Orange. Nigella Lawson also has a a citrus cake recipe using fruit and peel made with clementines.
Lemon Cake Recipe
This paleo cake recipe would likely be incredible with lemons, though adjustments would likely need to be made. If you do experiment leave a comment and let us know if it works.

3 Design Tips for Your Master Bathroom
Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com
To create the master bath of your dreams, include the following pieces of advice on your design process:
Choose a relaxing color palette
Color has the power to energize and to soothe, to wake you up and calm you down. Consider the mood you want to evoke before selecting your palette of materials. As you develop your bathroom color scheme, remember that color comes from more than wall paint and fabric. The hues in the cabinetry wood and in the stone or tile you choose for floors and walls play a major role in creating an overall color personality. Even the sink and tub contribute to the bathroom color scheme, whether they’re made of white porcelain, dyed concrete, or stone. Source: BHG
Have a universal layout
Another trend in master bathrooms is the use of universal design. This approach, designed to accommodate people of all ages and abilities, includes wider doorways, showers with no raised lip around the bottom, larger shower doors and more room around fixtures. Once thought of as industrial-looking, universal elements such as grab bars now blend seamlessly into even the most luxurious master bathrooms. Source: HGTV
Create lots of storage
Since most people have many hygiene products, a bathroom remodel is the perfect time to increase your storage space to ensure better bathroom organization. Add bathroom cabinets, drawers, shelves or even carts to store all of these necessary items.
Cabinets that have molding and glass fronts increase the appeal of the bathroom by giving it more character. If you can’t replace your cabinets, consider adding decorative knobs and pulls to update the look. Source: HomeAdvisor
With the luxury bathroom you have in mind, you should only use bathroom fixtures of highest standards. Take a look at what we have in store for you, and call us if you need any assistance!

Are You a Quality Leader? Summary and Scenarios (Part 3/3)
SUMMARY: The Principles of Quality Leadership
SYSTEMS
- Improve SYSTEMS and examine processes before blaming people
- Have a CUSTOMER orientation and focus toward employees and citizens.
- Believe that the best way to improve the quality of work or service is to ASK and LISTEN to employees who are doing the work.
- Be committed to the PROBLEM- SOLVING process; use it and let DATA, not emotions, drive decisions.
LEADERSHIP
- Be a FACILITATOR and COACH. Develop an OPEN atmosphere that encourages providing and accepting FEEDBACK
- Encourage CREATIVITY through RISK- TAKING and be tolerant of honest MISTAKES.
- Avoid top-down, POWER-ORIENTED decision-making whenever possible.
- Manage on the BEHAVIOR of 95% of employees and not on the 5% who cause problems. Deal with the 5% PROMPTLY and FAIRLY.
TEAMS
- Believe in, foster and support TEAMWORK
- With teamwork, develop with employees agreed-upon GOALS and a PLAN to achieve them.
- Seek employees INPUT before you make key decisions.
- Strive to develop mutual RESPECT and TRUST among employees; DRIVE OUT FEAR.
__________________________________________
Leadership Scenarios
- You are a supervisor assigned to a man with a gun call. On your arrival, you see that an outer perimeter has not yet been established. You see five to six officers standing around near the house in question. What do you do?
- Upon reviewing the shift schedule, you see that you must change the days from at least three of the six patrol officers that have been assigned to you. How do you go about doing this?
- One of your officers consistently makes errors in his reports. How do you approach this problem?
- You have been the shift supervisor on the night shift for over six months. You have eight police officers assigned to you. You are in the process of establishing goals and objectives for the coming year. How do you proceed?
- You have been asked by your supervisor to increase the number of traffic tickets written on your shift. How do you proceed?
- One officer on your shift has problems getting to work on time. What do you do?
- The officers on your shift want to know how they are doing. They have requested feedback from you regarding their performance. How do you respond?
- Your supervisor wants a new beat selection policy implemented immediately. What’s your first step?
- Your work unit has just taken a vote and most your officers want to work a 4-10 shift (four 10-hour work days followed by three days off). What’s your plan? What role will data play here?
- Your officers have been responding to a great number of shoplifting complaints from area merchants. Most of the complaints involve thefts less than $10 in value. Your officers feel that this is unreasonably adding to their work load. The merchants feel that a police response to this problem is important to them. What do you do?

3 Bathroom Updates You Can Do Over the Weekend
Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com
Renovation can be such a hassle. It takes so much of your time, money, and energy. If you want to update the look of your bathroom without spending a lot, then these tips are just right for you:
Change light fixture
To make sure this remains an easy DIY project, stick with the same type of light fixture as your existing one—and plan to keep it in the same place on the wall or ceiling. Lighting trends fluctuate a good amount, so it’s likely your current fixture is dating your bathroom more than anything else. Replacing an old light fixture will not only immediately update the style of the bathroom, but it will also give you the opportunity to adjust the amount of light the room receives, whether the current fixture is too bright or too dim. Source: SouthernLiving
Replace old shower head
When it comes to comfort, adding a new shower head is an important update that will look good and help you feel even better. Not only are shower heads more affordable than ever, but they will make your morning routine a welcome part of your day. After all, what beats a refreshing shower that you can customize to fit any need? Installing a new shower head is an easy process that can be accomplished with a good wrench and some plumber’s tape. While you are at it, consider updating the shower curtain and adding non-slip shower mats to complete the new look. Source: DoItYourself
Add style
Accessorize the space with a new bathroom mirror or medicine cabinet. Smaller bathroom decor, like a soap pump, tissue box cover, and beautiful textiles, are easy and affordable ways to adorn your restroom.
To create a spa-like retreat, decorate with soothing shades of blue and white, and accessorize with organic elements like woven baskets, lush plantings, river pebbles, and a teak bathmat. Source: Zillow

Elements of an Easy to Clean Bathroom
Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com
Do you know anyone who loves to clean the bathroom? No one likes it. We all just do it out of necessity. If you are looking for a way to lighten the burden of this chore, then switch to the following:
One piece toilet
If you’ve ever transformed into a contortionist while reaching to clean every last yucky crevice in your toilet, the one-piece model was made for you. Because traditional two-piece toilets have a separate bowl and tank, they have lots of tiny crevices that are hard to really get clean.
You may spend a bit more for a one-piece model, which is molded from a single piece of porcelain, but the amount of scrubbing time you save may make it worthwhile. Plus, you don’t have to get up close and personal with the nasty parts.
Today’s pressure-assisted toilets not only reduce cleaning time, but virtually eliminate backups, thanks to a forceful jet of water that scrubs the entire bowl and removes everything in its path. On this one, you’ll actually save water. Because of their eco-smart designs, these high-efficiency toilets can save a family of four up to 16,500 gallons of water annually. Source: HouseLogic
Wall-mounted faucets
Gravity is working for you, carrying water and soap residue away from the faucet instead of having it all collect at the base. Wall-mounted faucets also keep the counter clear, making it easier to wipe it down. Source: Houzz
Proper ventilation
A quiet fan or open windows will reduce the moisture in a bathroom, therefore decreasing the likelihood of mold. Preventive measures such as proper ventilation can reduce time spent cleaning in the long run. Source: DailyHerald
Less grout
Tile grout attracts dirt and grime, which has to be meticulously cleaned out by hand. Instead of small porcelain or stone pieces, choose large-format tiles or solid slabs for countertops, wet rooms, and wall coverings. If you hate cleaning seams, paint any walls that don’t need tile, or consider using an attractive vinyl or laminate covering. Source: NearSay

Magic Spoon Keto Cereal
Elana, did you say Keto Cereal? Yes, I did! My friends Gabi and Greg have created a low-carb Keto Cereal called Magic Spoon.
Magic Spoon Keto Cereal
This is the only cereal in my pantry. I stopped buying breakfast cereal in 1998 when I went gluten-free after being diagnosed with Celiac Disease.
Low-Carb Cereal
That’s because breakfast cereal used to be a carb bomb. Not anymore. Magic Spoon Keto Cereal has only 3 grams net carbs per serving and is absolutely loaded with protein –12 grams!
Gluten-Free Cereal
Like me, one of my boys has Celiac Disease. Now, it’s amazing to have a low-carb, gluten-free cereal that I can feel great about giving them for a high-protein, healthy breakfast when they need to get out the door fast.
Magic Spoon Cereal Flavors
With four magically delicious flavors, each a nod to your childhood favorite, Magic Spoon tastes just like you remember, only better and without all the crud.
- Fruity
- Cinnamon
- Cocoa
- Frosted
Where to Buy Keto Cereal

4 Bathroom Spring Cleaning Tips
Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com
The start of spring, as we all know, signals the time to tidy up. Create a spotless bathroom for you and your family by following these instructions:
Snip the curtain
Short shower curtains look tidy and tailored, and they don’t trap dust and moisture. To create the look in your bathroom, cut a fabric curtain 2 inches longer than the desired length, then fold and sew a 2-inch hem. Leave the plastic liner hanging full-length in the tub to contain water from the shower. Source: MarthaStewart
Make the mirror shine
Just mix one to two teaspoons of dish detergent in a large bucket of warm water and wash down the mirror. Then, use a squeegee to wipe off the suds horizontally. You can either use a sponge or newspaper to dry the area: just be careful because smudging can occur due to the ink. Source: HuffPost
Freshen up the fabrics
Grab all your clothing, towels, washcloths and other linens from the bathroom and throw them in the washer. While you’re at it, think about the items you just gathered. Were any of your fabrics worn out? You don’t want your bathroom looking messy and dingy. Keep what’s acceptable or take the opportunity to completely renovate your fabrics.
Don’t be afraid to incorporate bold colors and unique patterns in your washcloths and towels. Changing your window treatments and/or shower curtains are also great ways for giving your bathroom a total makeover. Make sure you wash whatever you’re keeping and find a neat place to store extra materials. Source: AngiesList
Scrub the grout
Take a look at the grout in your bathroom and decide for yourself on the right plan of action. If your grout is mildly stained and grimy, a simple scrub clean will do — start with vinegar, then move on to a baking soda paste if you need a little more muscle. The time consuming part of this is just systematically working your way across each inch of grout in every direction — that’s what might take all day. Source: ApartmentTherapy

Here’s a Quiz: Are You a Quality Leader? (Principles 1-6)
Test yourself on these Principles of Quality Leadership — principles that a 21st century police leader must practice!
Each of the Twelve Principles is followed by a set of questions that you need to ask yourself if you are to maintain of become an effective police leader.
At the end there are a number of leadership scenarios that can be used.
Principles 1-6
- 1. IMPROVE SYSTEMS AND EXAMINE PROCESSES BEFORE PLACING BLAME ON PEOPLE.
Continually monitor the systems you are responsible for to improve the quality of the process and, ultimately, the quality of the output. Leaders have responsibility for the improvement of systems — this is creative and important work. In the past, we have emphasized that the job of a manager was to watch over, maintain and inspect systems. Our job is to improve these systems — continually, incessantly and forever. If we see our job as inspecting systems we can be replaced by a machine — a computer. Our employees also see that kind of work as unimportant. If we see our job as the improvement of systems we cannot be replaced by a machine — only creative and caring people can do this kind of work and our employees know it. This is also a good human behavior rule. People don’t like to fail. When they do, it is wise to look at systems first. Only after systems are examined is it fair and safe to examine how people may have failed. We should be trying to get at the root of the problem, not attempting to fix blame on an individual. If a system is out of control it is only a matter of time before the next employee gets in trouble. The solution is to fix the system. Leaders work on the system; employees work in the system. Standards need to be set, feedback given, and control limits established. There will be variation in performance but it should be within the established upper and lower control limits. Variation is a fact of life and to be expected. Those who fall below acceptable performance should not be punished. Our JOB is to ascertain what they need from us — training, encouragement, and support, feedback — to get them into the range of acceptable work performance. Think of three instances of an employee in trouble. Which situations appear to be a result of a system problem and which instances appear to be a person problem?
- How would you approach an employee who is having trouble because of a system problem?
- How would you approach an employee with a person problem? How are the two approaches different?
- How do you know which problem is the result of a systems problem and which is the result of a person problem?
2. HAVE A CUSTOMER ORIENTATION AND FOCUS TOWARD EMPLOYEES AND CITIZENS. A customer orientation and focus means that we listen to our customers. Customers may be citizens, elected officials, employees, or interest groups. As supervisors, our direct customers are our employees who provide service to their customers — the citizens and taxpayers. Listening and being responsive to citizens is our goal. There are, of course, many parameters — the law, ethics, and budgetary constraints. In this era of community policing listening to the customer is a vital part of the job. Professionals do not have the exclusive market anymore of knowing what is best for their patients, clients, or customers. Today, people want to be heard and participate.
- Who are your customers?
- Who are persons in your organization who could consider you their customer?
- How could you get honest feedback from your customers?
- How could this make your job easier?
3. BELIEVE THAT THE BEST WAY TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF WORK OR SERVICE IS TO ASK AND LISTEN TO EMPLOYEES WHO ARE DOING THE WORK. As supervisors, we do not do the frontline work. We depend on others to do the job of responding directly to the customers; the citizens of our city. It has been a long time since most of us have performed this job. Therefore, we depend on the men and women who do this job to tell us what they need to get the job done. As bosses, one of the most important things we can do for our employees is to ask them what they need and listen to what they have to say. Listening is the difficult part for those of us who have spent years learning how to tell people what to do. Active listening is a skill that can be learned and developed. Using the inquiry process, which is asking the right questions, is also a skill that can be learned. Quality leaders refrain from telling; they ask the right question; how do you know that? What have you learned through this effort? What kind of help do you need from me? The power of this is that an individual comes to his/her own solution with the help – not direction – of the leader. Listening and questioning are important skills to develop as a supervisor. Employees want bosses who are willing to listen and we need employees who will honestly tell us about what’s going on.
- What are the characteristics of a good listener?
- How do you know when someone is really listening to you?
- Why do leaders need to ask and listen?
- Why is listening such an important leadership skill?
4. BE COMMITTED TO THE PROBLEM-SOLVING PROCESS; USE IT AND LET DATA, NOT EMOTIONS, DRIVE DECISIONS. Use the problem-solving process: identify the nature and scope of the problem, seek several alternatives that will solve the problem, choose the best alternative, implement the chosen alternative, follow-up on its implementation (correct, if necessary, to make it better). Too often we use our emotions or feelings to choose a course of action. This principle encourages the use of data, figures, information and facts to drive that decision- making. Soliciting input is not data – it is important but let’s not call it data. You should know the data tools; how to gather data, how to show it graphically, and how to look at variation of data. Let data do the talking. When employees ask for new things or ways of doing things encourage them to use data to support their recommendations — not use of power (We have all decided that…) or use of feelings (You know this is the better way of doing that…). Collecting data is using statistical tools to understand, bring into control and improve a process. Using data will help our decision-making because we will be able to answer that extremely important question — How do we know this is true?
- Can you think of instances when you have witnessed data being used instead of emotions to make a good decision?
- Think of a problem that is confronting you now. How can data be used to resolve that problem? How could that data be visually portrayed?
- When problems are presented to you, what are some data-related questions you can ask?
5. BE A FACILITATOR AND COACH. DEVELOP AN OPEN ATMOSPHERE THAT ENCOURAGES PROVIDING AND ACCEPTING FEEDBACK. A leader’s job is challenging and gives us opportunity for personal growth because it has such new opportunities. Being an effective Quality leader is being a coach, a teacher, student, role-model and, most important, a champion for sustained improvement. We are in the business of helping people develop and experience personal growth. Our employee’s goal is to deliver a quality service to our citizens by being responsive and sensitive to those citizen’s needs. We can model this behavior by being responsive and sensitive to our employee’s needs. All this can only be accomplished in an atmosphere of trust, honesty and openness. Part of this process is honest feedback. An honest feedback system is essential for the creation of a quality organization. Feedback is for the improvement of the receiver. It is not designed to make the giver feel better by venting. Venting is sometimes necessary, but don’t mistake it for feedback. Leaders have consistency of purpose — a vision as to where they are going. Leaders develop the competency of their people. They are committed. Their employees know where they stand!
- What is coaching? What is the difference between telling and coaching?
- Can you think of a time when you were coached to do better? How did you feel? Why?
- Which is more difficult, giving or accepting feedback? Why is that?
- How could your workplace become more open?
6. ENCOURAGE CREATIVITY THROUGH RISK-TAKING AND BE TOLERANT OF HONEST MISTAKES. We will never get creativity and innovation from our employees when we tell them they cannot make mistakes. All that we know about people tells us that creativity is chilled and repressed in such an environment. It is not easy to accept honest mistakes. The price we pay for zero defects, however, is zero creativity. Many of us have been working together for many years. We all remember each other’s mistakes and failures. Without forgiving and forgetting we will never be comfortable in the workplace. If we don’t permit honest mistakes new ways and ideas will never be tried. It’s simply too risky in an authoritarian organization. Quality and creativity is the result of a constant process of trying and improving.
- How do you see quality and creativity being related?
- How would you encourage more creativity in your employees?
- What barriers might you encounter?
- What would be the steps you would take to creatively improve a system and overcome those barriers or obstacles?
- What is an honest mistake? How would you demonstrate leadership to your employees in these situations?
[The above materials and many others can be found in The Quality Leadership Workbook (Couper, 2017).
