Random Thoughts on Sports Performance Training – Installment 33

It’s time for this month’s installment of my random thoughts on sports performance training. In light of my ongoing 30% off sale (ending Sunday at midnight) on my Sturdy Shoulder Solutions resource (enter coupon code BASEBALL at checkout for the discount), I thought I’d focus this edition on the shoulder.

1. If you want a healthy shoulder, getting tobacco products out of your life is a good place to start.

The research is pretty clear: smoking is a bad idea (and an independent risk factor) if you’re looking to stay healthy from a musculoskeletal standpoint, or have a good outcome in rehabilitation (whether conservative or post-surgical) . Here’s an excerpt from a recent study with an excellent review of the literature:

“Cigarette smoking adversely affects a variety of musculoskeletal conditions and procedures, including spinal fusion, fracture healing, surgical wound healing, tendon injury and knee ligament reconstruction. More recently, smoking has been suggested to negatively impact rotator cuff tear pathogenesis and healing. Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, a potent vasoconstrictor that can reduce the blood supply to the already relatively avascular rotator cuff insertion. Furthermore, carbon monoxide in smoke reduces the oxygen tension levels available for cellular metabolism. The combination of these toxins may lead to the development of attritional rotator cuff tears with a decreased capacity for healing.”

Many times, we’re looking for the best exercise, rehabilitation protocol, soft tissue treatment, or volume amounts – but we really ought to be looking at lifestyle factors.

With a large baseball readership on this site, the logical next question: are these harmful effects also noted with smokeless tobacco (i.e., dip/chew)? The research is somewhat sparse, as it’s harder to study a younger, active population than a bunch of middle-aged post-operative rotator cuff patients. However, it’s hard to believe that the aforementioned carbon monoxide implications would cause 100% of the issues and that the nicotine would serve as just an innocent bystander. So if you’re looking to check every box in your quest to stay healthy, it’s not a bad idea to lay off the dip.

And, if healthy tendons aren’t enough to convince you, do yourself a favor and read this article by Curt Schilling.

2. The 1-arm, 1-leg landmine press isn’t a mainstay in your training programs, but can be a perfect fit in a few circumstances.

This looks like kind of a wussy exercise, but I actually really like it in two circumstances.

a. It’s awesome in a post-surgery period when you can’t load like crazy, but still want folks to be challenged in their upper extremity progressions. The single-leg support creates a more unstable environment, which means that antagonist activity is higher and there is more work going to joint stability than actual movement. In other words, it makes pressing safer.

b. Once we get to the inseason period, it allows us to check two boxes with a single exercise: single-leg balance and upper body strength (plus serratus activation/scapular upward rotation).

3. Posterior pelvic tilt increases lower trap activation.

I’ve written about it a lot in the past: core positioning has an incredibly important impact on shoulder function. Check out this study on how reducing anterior pelvic tilt increases lower trapezius activation during arm elevation and the return from the overhead position.

In my experience working with extension-rotation athletes (particularly baseball players), one of the biggest risk factors for shoulder injury is when the lower trapezius can’t keep up with the latissimus dorsi. Just consider the attachment points of the lat in the picture below; as you can imagine, if you posteriorly tilt the pelvis, the lat is inhibited, making it easier for lower trap to get to work.

The lower trapezius is very important for providing posterior tilt (slight tipping back) of the scapula and assisting in upward rotation. These two functions are key for a pitcher to get the scapula in the correct position during the lay-back phase of throwing.

By contrast, the lat has more of a “gross” depression effect on the scapula; it pulls it down, but doesn’t contribute to posterior tilting or upward rotation. This might help with an adult rotator cuff pain patient who has an aggressive scapular elevation (shrug) substitution pattern, but it’s actually problematic for a thrower who is trying to get his scapula up and around the rib cage to make sure that the ball-on-socket congruency is “flush” when it really matters: the maximal external rotation position.

As such, you can say that the lat and lower trap “compete” for control of the scapula – and the lat has a big advantage because of its cross-sectional area and multiple attachment points. It’s also much easier to train and strengthen – even if it’s by accident. Upper body work in faulty core positioning (in this case, too much anterior pelvic tilt and the accompanying lumbar extension) shifts the balance to the lats.

We’ll often hear throwers cued “down and back” during arm care drills. The intention – improving posterior tilt via lower trap activation – is admirable, but the outcome usually isn’t what’s desired. Unless athletes are actually put in a position of posterior tilt where they can actually feel the lower traps working, they don’t get it. Instead, they pull further down into scapular depression, which feeds the lat-dominant strategy. This is why we teach almost all our throwers to differentiate between depression and posterior tilt early on in their training at Cressey Sports Performance.

The Medium is the Message

While I was a street cop, I studied to be a sociologist which is the study of human relationships and social institutions. For me, this was a great learning opportunity and knowledge that I carried with me into the ranks and as a police leader.

I recently stopped by a coffee shop in a nearby town and noticed two officers who had stopped by for a “cuppa joe.” They were dressed similar the picture above. I thought maybe they were taking a break from SWAT training. No, this was their standard uniform.

The sociologist in me kicked into gear. The medium (their uniform) was their message (see Marshal McLuhan). And I did not like the message I was receiving because it conflicted with what I saw the mission of police in our society. They both appeared to be nice guys (to me, a white guy and former cop). But I thought how would they appear others? Would they be able to seem available, approachable, open, and trustworthy to all they would meet? I doubt it. The image may be that they were blue-clad tactical soldiers ready for combat in a dangerous environment (which certainly was not the case in the sleepy, upper-middle-class, white town in which I was having coffee.

If the police in every city and town were interested in aligning their mission with their message (appearance) I think they would reconsider this current trend to militarize their clothing and equipment. I see this trend as trying to give an image of protection, but as the loss of serving,

In the past, I have written about how police officers assigned to schools should be dressed — in blazers not tactical gear — because it simply gives students the wrong message. The same could be said about daily patrol gear.

I have little problem with police being adequately equipped to respond to SWAT situations, but for daily patrol wear this is I find is unacceptable. Police must remember that they will be seen more than spoken to.

I am unsure how this all came about. Perhaps it was in response to the fear that permeated the country after that fateful day on September 11, 2001. Nevertheless, police are not to be our urban soldiers. There is a reason why our society has separated the tasks and functions of police and military. We all need to make sure it stays that way.

Some might call what I have to say as “soft policing,” but I must tell you that in working with youth, minority communities, protestors, and hostage-takers, soft works. How any of us present ourselves matters greatly. What’s the message we want our police to broadcast to those who daily encounter them? Dress matters.

If the message we want our police image is that they are helpers, approachable, fair, and trust-worthy, many police are giving the wrong message today.

Using The Content-Length Header Field In Email Forensics

by Arman Gungor As forensic examiners, we often have to analyze emails in isolation without the benefit of server metadata, neighbor messages, or data from other sources such as workstations. When authenticating an email in isolation, every detail counts—we review a long list of data points such as formatting discrepancies within the message body, dates hidden in MIME boundary delimiters, and header fields. One data point I often see being overlooked is the Content-Length header field. The value this field contains can be leveraged for a simple but powerful check to verify an email’s payload. In this post, I will discuss how we need to preserve emails to be able to utilize the Content-Length header field, how to utilize the data in this field, and a couple of use case scenarios. Let’s start by defining Content-Length. Read More

Egg-Free Mayonnaise

This vegan egg-free mayonnaise is a family favorite. With only four ingredients it couldn’t be easier to make!

Egg-Free Mayonnaise Recipe

All you need to make this egg-free mayonnaise recipe is olive oil, marcona almonds, apple cider vinegar, and maple syrup.

Vegan Mayonnaise Recipe

If you don’t want to use maple syrup you can use agave. I don’t like to use agave but since it has such a neutral flavor profile it’s perfect for this recipe. Honey doesn’t work in this recipe, and it’s not vegan.

How to Make Egg-Free Mayonnaise

You will definitely want to use marcona almonds for this recipe. There’s something special about them. First they don’t have skins. Second, they’re roasted. Third, they’re salted and oily.

Marcona Almond Mayonnaise
    Ingredients
    Instructions
    1. Pour vinegar and maple syrup into vitamix and puree on high speed for 20 seconds until combined
    2. With motor running on medium or high, drizzle in olive oil to create an emulsion
    3. Don't worry, if you don't get the emulsification, the almonds will thicken up your mixture
    4. Blend in 2 tablespoons of almonds, then check for thickness and texture
    5. If necessary, blend in another tablespoon of almonds, until thick and creamy
    6. Serve with sandwiches, burgers and salads

    Marcona Almond Mayonnaise Recipe

I created this healthy mayonnaise recipe when adapting a peanut salad dressing from Martha Stewart Living. I had accidental emulsification resulting in this amazing vegan mayo!

    Homemade Mayonnaise Recipe

This homemade Marcona Almond Mayonnaise recipe works well on Kaleslaw and the perfect spread for sandwiches.

    Low Cholesterol Mayonnaise Recipe

This low cholesterol egg-free mayonnaise recipe is ideal for the cholesterol-phobes in your life!

This post is an oldie but goodie from the archives. I first shared this recipe in January 2010.

3 Tips to Remember When Painting the Bathroom

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

One way to completely change the look of your bathroom without actually spending very much is to repaint it. If you’re going to DIY this project, then make sure you keep in mind the following tips:

Photo by Sebastien LE DEROUT on Unsplash

    Ensure appropriate ventilation
Make sure your bathroom has proper ventilation. If not, the high levels of humidity can damage your paint. An open window and a ceiling fan or exhaust fan can help clear a room full of steam, removing moisture and drying walls. Try to run your fan for an hour after every shower or bath. Source: Forbes

    Pick the right paint
Bathroom windows take a beating: Blinds go up; windows open and close. Candles, blow dryers and other hot items often lie on top of the ledge. So use a durable semigloss or gloss trim paint that can handle the abuse. If the window will take direct rain and wind, chances are that it’ll get wet sooner rather than later, so you may want to use an exterior paint. Source: Houzz

Choose a color that works well with your space
Dark, weighty colors in small spaces often make the user feel claustrophobic. Should you surrender to that classic bathroom color, white? Not necessarily. Light, airy, bright bathroom paint colors such as light-blue or light-yellow always work well. Since darker paint colors make spaces feel small, any type of lighter color will be an improvement.

However, this is not an iron-clad edict. To make darker colors work in bathrooms, include other elements that leaven the ponderous feeling that dark colors bring on. Shiny, reflective chrome or brass sink fixtures or cabinet pulls add bright stars of light to dark spaces. Also, make sure that your bathroom lighting is adequate both for the space and for the color palette. Source: TheSpruce

Interview With Benjamin, Creator Of Metadata Interrogator

Ben, tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into digital forensics. Hello! So in terms of background, I come from predominantly a law enforcement background, although I’ve also worked in counter-fraud in the private sector too. I’ve been lucky enough to work in a number of roles in a variety of countries, and I feel that it’s given me a broad insight into our field and the challenges we face. I started working in proper investigations at that strange time when everything was just starting to go ‘online’ – the move to dynamic web pages and online services. At that time, I had a lot of colleagues who rejected the idea of digital investigations/forensics (“the internet is never going to take off!”), and so due to just having a love of tech, I was always given any case that had a technical/digital element to it – and that was really how I began in digital forensics! Planning an Outdoor Shower

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

For people who love hiking, going to the beach, and other outdoor activities, having a shower before entering the house means less mess to clean. You get to avoid bringing sand, sludge, and dirt inside. Have an outdoor shower ready by summer when you start doing the project today! Here are some pointers to consider:

Photo by Abigail Lynn on Unsplash

    Determine where to place it
“Outdoor showers are a nice feature for pool owners or beachfront homes,” says Jarret Acevedo, a master plumber and owner of Jarret Acevedo Plumbing and Heating. However, depending on how low your temperatures drop in the winter, you’ll need to take precautions with your shower. “Care is definitely needed to plumb it properly to protect from freezing if it’s an area with frigid temperatures,” Acevedo warns.

Placing your shower strategically kills two birds with one stone. “Depending on your layout, you can punch through the shower wall and build a shower that opens up to another rain shower outside,” says Jonathan Self. Source: Freshome

    Have a good drainage system
Where water goes is just as important as where water comes from. Most homeowners drain their outdoor showers into a separate manhole, a storm ditch or a gutter system linking to the home’s graywater tank. Locating your shower in a place that receives a lot of sunlight is another way to eliminate water buildup.

“Be sure to check your local building codes about the disposal of gray water,” says Gloven.

Chris Marchese, CEO of Marquis Gardens, suggests using Permeable Pavers or artificial turf for drainage and flooring because they blend into the environment. He also notes that it’s critical to only use biodegradable soap and shampoo when your drainage line is being naturally discharged.

If you’re concerned with slipping or mildew, composite boards make great flooring for outdoor showers. “They dry quickly and feel fantastic underfoot,” says Thomas O’Rourke, owner of Decking Hero. “Plus, they last between 25-30 years, so it’s a good value for your money, about $70 per square foot.” Source: FoxNews

    Add a privacy wall
Outdoor showers typically offer less privacy than their indoor counterparts, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. A well-placed wall creates a quaint little nook in which to shower while enjoying the sunshine. The secluded area allows for peaceful bathing in the buff—no matter how nosy the neighbors. Source: BHG

Using Distinctive Digital Traces To Evaluate Non-Obvious Links And Repetitions

Timothy Bollé discusses his research at DFRWS EU 2018. Timothy: Hello. I am Timothy Bollé. I am currently doing my PhD at the School of Criminal Justice in the University of Lausanne, with Professor Eoghan Casey. And I’m going to discuss the usage of computed similarity of distinctive digital traces to evaluate non-obvious links and repetitions in cyber-investigations. Just as a quick introduction: The online crimes are repetitive by nature, because there is a lot of victims to reach and because there is a low risk of being identified or apprehended. This repetition can be found as crime series, so it will be the same offender or same group of offenders that will commit multiple crimes. Or, as crime patterns, like hotspots or repeated victimization. To find this repetition, we can use forensic data, like traces, and also, more situational information, like modus operandi description or spatiotemporal information.

3 Ways to Stop Hair from Clogging the Bathroom Drain

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Do you often experience the struggle when you shower and then there’s a mini flood going on, because the drain gets clogged with your hair? It’s so annoying and disgusting. Stop it from happening again by doing the following tips:

Photo by Element5 Digital on Unsplash

    Prevent hair fall
Some hair is going to fall out in the shower while you are washing and conditioning, but there are some things you can do to keep hair out of your drains to start with. Brush your hair thoroughly before entering the shower. When loose hair collects on your fingers while shampooing and conditioning, set it on a shelf or the edge of the tub instead of dropping it into the water. If you prevent as much hair from entering the tub drain as possible, use a strainer to keep the rest out and then regularly use a cleaning or clog-preventing product on your drains, you should not have a clogging problem. Source: Hunker

    Install a drain screen
This is a piece of metal mesh that can be purchased at a local hardware store and that will fit directly over your current drain opening. It will trap any extra soap scum, hair, or other debris, keeping it from going down the drain. Read the installation directions closely, as you may need to secure the screen on top of the drain with plumber’s putty.

Make sure to remove the screen and clean it on a periodic basis to keep the water from backing up into your shower. Source: WikiHow

    Drench it with vinegar
Always keep a bottle of vinegar in the bathroom. Along with its many uses around the house, vinegar is a cheap way to keep your drains clear. Simply pour half a bottle of white vinegar down the drain every 3 months and it should do the trick. The secret is to let it sit for 10 minutes (the acid will remove any clogs that are forming) and then flush with hot water. Source: Home.BT

    What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Over the years, I’ve worked with several non-profits that focus on diagnosis, treatment, and support for those that suffer from MS. In my quest to spread awareness, I’m clearing up misconceptions and providing answers to questions commonly asked about this disease.

    My MS Story

I was diagnosed with MS in 2006 but was recently told by one of my neurologists that I’ve likely suffered from the disease since my first neurological symptoms appeared in 1993 when I was 25 years old.

    What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. Essentially, the immune system misfires, attacking the myelin sheaths that coat the brain and spinal cord.

    Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

Generally, symptoms of MS can include vision loss, severe fatigue, impaired balance and coordination, and more. The disease manifests differently in different people. Some MS patients remain symptom-free their entire lives while others may have severe chronic symptoms that don’t go away and end up wheelchair-bound.

What are the First signs of MS?

MS manifests differently in different people. Common initial symptoms can include, but are not limited to:

    • Impaired Vision
    • Balance Problems and Lack of Coordination
    • Unsteady Gait and Trouble Walking
    • Numbness and Tingling
    • Muscle Spasms and Pain
    • Weakness and Fatigue
    • Dizziness
    • Bladder and Bowel Issues
    • Sexual Dysfunction
    • Impaired Cognition

    How is MS Diagnosed?

Multiple sclerosis can often be very difficult to diagnose. The most common methods of diagnosis for MS are MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), spinal tap, also called lumbar puncture (to examine cerebrospinal fluid for antibodies), and testing for impaired nerve responses using an optic test called EP (evoked potential).

Is MS More Common in Women or Men?

Multiple sclerosis is far more common in women than in men. It is thought that up to 80% of those who suffer from MS may be female.

    Do You Die from MS?

Multiple sclerosis is rarely a fatal disease. In fact, the leading causes of death for those with MS are the same as those in the general population.

    Celebrities with MS

Over the last few years, a number of young celebrities have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. They include:

    • Selma Blair
    • Jamie Lynn Seigler

Different Uses for Vinegar in the Bathroom

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Cleaning the bathroom shouldn’t be expensive and difficult. You can easily do it with one of the cheapest household items you can find: vinegar! Here are some ideas you should try the next time you see filth building up.

Photo by Daniel Fazio on Unsplash

    Toilet Stains
Deposits under the rim of your toilet bowl can be really hard to clean! To help dissolve the deposits and make them easier to scrub away, grab a few paper towels and your trusty bottle of white vinegar.

Soak a wad of paper towels with vinegar, then tuck the towels up under the rim of your toilet bowl. Let the vinegar work its magic for a few hours, then remove the paper towels and scrub clean. Source: OneGoodThingByJillee

    Dirty Shower Head
Too much gunk blocking your shower head? Just remove the shower head and soak for a few hours in straight vinegar. After soaking, give it a quick scrub!

Tip: If gunk doesn’t remove easily, wrap a watertight plastic bag full of vinegar around the shower head, secure with an elastic band and leave to soak. Source: StayAtHomeMum

    Blurred Mirror
Just like windows, mirrors can be cleaned with a 50/50 vinegar and water mix in a spray bottle and wiped with old rags from cut-up t-shirts or newspaper (paper towels leave a lot of residue with this method).

The easiest way, if you have them, is to use microfiber cloths (1 regular one wet, and one polishing one dry, or just one regular wet one and one regular dry) to clean without the need for chemicals at all. Source: WellnessMama

    Shower Curtain Mildew
Put the shower curtain in the washing machine with light-colored towels; add 1 cup white vinegar to the detergent and wash. Source: DIYNetwork

    Grimy Floor
Clean the floor around the drain with a vinegar solution: 1 cup of vinegar for every 3 liters of water. A handy time to do this is when you’re mopping the floors! Keep in mind that the use of vinegar on floors should be limited to no-wax floors. Source: Cleanipedia

If your bathroom fixtures are still dirty despite all the effort and cleaning items you’ve used, then maybe it’s high time for a replacement. Check out our website for the most affordable yet best-looking items in the market.

Standardized Corpus For SQLite Database Forensics

Sven Schmitt discusses his work at DFRWS EU 2018. Sven: Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for having me. I will today talk about SQLite database forensics. My name is Sven Schmitt, as Bruce introduced correctly. I am a PhD student with Felix Freiling at the FAU University in Erlangen-Nuremberg, but actually, I only pursue my PhD during night-times and on the weekends, because I mainly work for law enforcement in Germany. The topic that I’ve brought to Florence this time is ‘A Standardized Corpus for SQLite Database Forensics’. Basically, we will talk about forensic corpora in general, at the beginning. Then, we will introduce the forensic corpus that we created during this work, and I’ll who a little bit details about the tests and the results that we have, because we tested some tools against the corpus, and finally, we derived some points, some requirements that we think are useful for forensic tools in general.

Webinar: How To Image Macs With The T2 Chip

BlackBag Technologies is proud to announce the first and only solution to produce a decrypted physical image of Apple’s latest Mac systems utilizing the T2 chip. Current logical imaging solutions, including functionality available in the previous version of BlackBag’s own MacQuisition tool, and competing solutions like Sumuri Recon and EnCase, miss critical file system information that only this new level of physical access will be able to provide. This vital imaging functionality will be available in the upcoming MacQuisition 2019 R1 release and the output will be seamlessly ingested for analysis by BlackLight 2019 R1.

Turbinia: Automation Of Forensic Processing In The Cloud

Thomas Chopitea and Aaron Peterson discuss their research at DFRWS US 2018. Thomas: It’s our first time presenting here at DFRWS. It’s also my first time and Aaron’s first time attending. So, we’re pretty excited to be here. I’m Tom, this is Aaron. We both work at Google. We do forensics and incident response. So, this basically means that we write a lot of code, because we’re lazy and we like to do things automatically. Aaron is the core developer for [Turbinia], I’m one of the core developers of [dfTimewolf], which we will introduce in a minute. We’re in this sweet position where we can write a lot of code and also use the same code that we write in our daily incidents. So, that’s pretty cool, because we don’t have to follow feature requests [… well, we do … between] both of us. But most of the time, we can get … since we’re in the same team, we can get things solved pretty fast. And we really know what to expect and what we want our tools to do. So, that’s pretty cool.

Baseball Athleticism: It’s Probably Not What You Think It Is

A few weeks ago, I was in Ft. Myers to deliver an in-service for the Minnesota Twins sports medicine staff, and one of the strength and conditioning interns asked me a question:

“I’m new to baseball. If there was one important reminder you’d give to someone in my position with respect to working with baseball players, what would it be?”

    My response:

“You have to emotionally separate yourself from your perception of what makes athletes successful. Often, baseball players are successful because of traits and characteristics as much as they are actual athleticism.”

    Think about it…

We’ve seen position players who are phenomenal athletes who didn’t make it to the big leagues because they couldn’t hit breaking balls.

We know of absolutely electric arms who never panned out at higher levels of pro ball because they didn’t have effective secondary offerings to complement their fastballs.

We’ve watched underwhelming physiques hit mammoth homeruns, and we’ve watched bad bodies on the mound dominate hitters because they’ve mastered a knuckleball.

Do you think these absurdly long fingers might be able to learn an elite changeup faster than ones that are, say, six inches shorter?

And, do you think this insanely long middle finger might impact how well he can throw a slider?

Don’t you think this freaky hypermobility might be advantageous for this pitcher to contort his body in all sorts of directions to create deception and get way down the mound?

Hitters with 20/10 vision are going to stand a better chance of making it to the big leagues than those with 20/40.

I’m not saying you should encourage baseball players to be sloppy fat or weak, or to encourage them to avoid stretching or lifting. I’m just telling you that you need to appreciate that every athlete is successful for different reasons. Some of these traits will impact how you train that player, and others won’t matter much at all. Either way, appreciate that baseball players rarely look, run, or jump like chiseled NFL wide receivers. And, more importantly, figure out how to heavily leverage and protect the exact characteristics that make them great.

If you’re interested in learning about how your own unique structural and functional characteristics – and how they relate to your on-field performance and training preparations – I’d strongly encourage you to consider a visit to a Cressey Sports Performance facility to get a thorough evaluation to determine where your deficiencies exist. When you put a video evaluation of pitching/hitting alongside a thorough movement screen, it can be a very powerful combination to unlock hidden potential. For both amateur and professional players, we offer both short-term consultations and a more extensive Elite Baseball Development Summer Collegiate Program.

4 Ways to Detox Your Body

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

In a previous blog we discussed the many reasons why it’s important to do a regular detox. Today, we’ll talk about the different lifestyle changes you can make to achieve a healthier you.

Photo by Brooke Lark on Unsplash

    Lounge in the sauna
Our immune systems are up against an arsenal of toxins that our ancestors never dreamt of: pesticides, toxic metals, PCBs in plastics, environmental pollution, and even GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Combining this with a lifelong poor diet is a set-up for accumulated toxins and a potentially weakened immune system.

Luckily, infrared sauna treatments can give your body an extra push to eliminate these toxins. Specifically, this is achieved through sweating, which has been shown in several studies to increase detoxification and lower circulating levels of toxins in the body. Source: PaleoHacks

    Get a good night’s sleep
“Giving yourself a good night’s rest is one of the best ways to detox your body and reset,” Asay says. “Sleep has been connected to weight loss, reduced cortisol levels and stress, and improved overall health.” The best part about sleep is that it takes absolutely no effort—just make sure the temperature of your room is cool, and give yourself a 10-hour block to snooze. Source: TheThirty.Birdie

    Avoid using unhealthy oils
Toxic oils can include vegetable oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil, cotton seed oil and canola oil. Substitute with good oils, such as extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, hemp oil and flaxseed oil. Hemp oil, for example, is a great source of omega-3s, -6s, and -9s. Source: MindBodyGreen

    Eat organic
While you’re munching on yummy greens and gut-friendly pre- and probiotics, make the switch to organic/pastured meats and dairy instead of using conventional animal products. According to Consumer Reports, 80% of all antibiotics sold in the United States are used for livestock and other farm animals. If you are serious about your detoxing goals, you don’t want that in your body! Source: TheTruthAboutCancer

Do you have an infrared sauna at home yet? These are the types of saunas that work best for detoxifying the body. It’s a great fit for any house. We can help you find the model that will suit your needs best. Visit our website here!

Amped Software Launches Amped Replay: An Enhanced Video Player for Investigators

Amped Software has launched Amped Replay, a new tool which allows frontline police officers and investigators to quickly and easily view, analyze and present video evidence. With Amped Replay, non-specialist units can convert and play videos from a variety of proprietary formats, apply basic enhancements, annotate and redact images for investigations and media release, all while maintaining the integrity of the evidence and without having to rely on the availability of experts in the forensic video lab. Video footage from CCTV and DVR systems, body-worn cameras, dash cams, mobile phones and social media can be crucial in progressing an investigation, especially in the “golden hour” when time is of the essence. However, with a multitude of proprietary video formats to consider, even playing and viewing the footage can be time-consuming and difficult. Powered by the same CCTV video conversion engine that sits behind Amped Software’s other solutions for forensic experts, Amped Replay solves this problem by enabling users to simply drag and drop the footage into the software, where it is ready to view.

An Explosion In Digital Evidence Coming Thanks To IoT And 5G: HancomGMD

New IoT devices with cameras, 5G, and AI analytics coming in 2019 will change the digital forensic landscape forever, says HancomGMD. In late 2016, South Korea was rocked by one of its biggest political corruption scandals in history that eventually led to former President Park Guen-Hye being impeached and jailed. A special prosecutor was elected to proceed with the slew of bribery charges. By law, investigators had limited days to investigate and prosecute. They had confiscated over several hundreds of smartphones as evidence. With more in the form of notebooks and desktops -- from suspects and needed to analyze tens of thousands of phone records and chat messages under a tight deadline. A single piece of evidence from any one of them could have been the smoking gun needed for a successful indictment.

3 Important Reasons Why You Should Do a Detox

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Due to several factors like food choices, quality of sleep, and environmental pollution, our body has to cope with an overload of toxins, every single day. To reverse the damaging effect our habits have caused, it’s best to do some sort of detox so we can achieve the following results:

Photo by Alexander Mils on Unsplash

    Avert chronic illnesses
Environmental toxins are responsible for many cancers, neurological diseases, heart disease, strokes… you name it. Our bodies do have a built-in detox function to deal with these dangers, but those systems are constantly overloaded! Detoxing assists and improves what our bodies are trying to do naturally. Source: MindBodyGreen

    Lose unwanted fat
The scientific establishment has convinced us that losing weight is just a matter of calories in/calories out, energy balance, and eating less and exercising more. How’s that working out for you? Probably not so well! Problem is, the scientific establishment is different from the established science. The science says that sugar and flour calories are WAY different. First, they trigger addiction and overeating. Second, they spike insulin and inflammation, which makes you store belly fat and blocks your ability to feel full. The verdict is in: Sugar calories are worse than whole food calories. Sugar spikes insulin and triggers inflammation, a double whammy guaranteed to mess up any attempt at long-term weight loss. When you detoxify, you eliminate nasty toxins (including sugar!) that hold your weight hostage. Source: DrHyman

    Healthier immune system
Since detoxing takes some of the workload off your organs, they can then do a better job of protecting your body from illness. You’ll absorb much-needed nutrients faster, like Vitamin C, which is known to be great for the immune system.

If you’re on a detox that involves taking certain herbs, you might also experience a boost to the lymphatic system. This system is partially responsible for keeping you healthy and toxin-free, so you’ll want it working well. Source: Classifieds.USAToday

Aside from the famous detox diets, one great way you can get rid of toxins while relaxing is to spend a few minutes in the sauna. Purchase a far infrared sauna for your home from us today!

    Burnout in DFIR (And Beyond)

by Christa Miller Quite a lot has been written over recent weeks about burnout. Not only DFIR-specific posts, first from Richard Bejtlich and then, in follow-up from Eric Huber and Brett Shavers; but also news articles including: • Why Are Young People Pretending to Love Work? (The New York Times) • How Millennials Became The Burnout Generation (BuzzFeed) • 10 Ways To Buck ‘The Cult of Busy’ Habit For A Better Work Life Balance (Forbes) Clearly, as The Guardian relates, the problem is endemic across industries, professions, and organizations. Yet burnout in the digital forensics world is unique. In addition to more typical work and life pressures, digital forensic examiners are faced with traumatic images and audio, long hours, and justice that often seems to be unevenly applied. Few other people understand the job or its stressors, and for those working counterterror investigations, operational security limits the possibility of “talk therapy” even further. Read More

Exercise of the Week: Heiden with Medicine Ball

Here is a good frontal plane power development exercise that Cressey Sports Performance – FL co-founder Shane Rye introduced recently. Because we aren’t very creative, we just call it a Heiden with Med Ball.

    Important coaching cues:

    1. The medicine ball (usually 6-10lbs) is held (but NOT bear-hugged) as a counterbalance that helps an athlete load back into the hips on the eccentric component. As such, this is an awesome drill for rotational athletes who tend to drift into the knee instead of loading back into the hip. This side angle should help you to appreciate it better:

    2. You’ll notice that the arms still move side to side in conjunction with the lower body pushoff. If the arms aren’t moving, it’s a sign that you are holding the ball too rigidly. You should actually be able to see hip-shoulder separation.

    3. Make sure that you are wearing sneakers that provide good lateral support.

    4. We’ll usually program 3-6 sets of 4-6 reps, and perform these after a warm-up, but before more aggressive sprint and agility work.

3 Healthy Bathroom Habits You Should Do

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

You probably didn’t know that a lot of your bathroom habits can affect your overall wellness. Maintain a healthy body by adapting the following tips to your daily routine:

Photo by Phebe Tan on Unsplash

Put the lid down when flushing
Unfortunately our bathrooms were designed for the convenience of plumbers, not the health of the users, so many of us have the sink where we brush our teeth in the same room as the toilet. Because when you flush:

There have been found over 3.2 million microbes per square inch in the average toilet bowl. According to germ expert Chuck Gerba, PhD, a professor of environmental microbiology at University of Arizona the aerosolized toilet water is propelled as far as 6 feet, settling on your dental toothbrush inclusively.

Really, if you have the opportunity, always put the toilet in its own water closet and not in the same place as you wash and brush your teeth. But if you can’t, at least always close the lid before you flush. And don’t cover your toothbrush; it has to air out and dry. Source: TreeHugger

    Squat
“One bathroom habit that might be beneficial is to put a stool under your toilet,” Jeanette Kimszal, RDN, NLC tells Bustle. When your legs are rested on the stool, your knees are bent at a 90 degree angle or squatting position. According to Kimszal, this will help relax the pelvic muscles and your bowels to flow freely. “When you are squatting it is released and you feel no strain,” she says. “Better bowel movements can improve digestive health.”

According to Gut/Hormone Health Expert, Dr. Inna Lukyanovsky, PharmD, anyone can benefit from squatting while they poop. “I used to have a major case of Crohn’s disease myself and it helps you empty out and feel better afterwards,” she says. Digestive issues usually stem from inflammation. If it’s a “silent inflammation,” Dr. Lukyanovsky says your body will age faster, your defense mechanisms won’t be the same, and it will be much easier for you to get infections. Source: Bustle

    Turn on the fan
A bathroom fan can do more than eliminate odor.  Another way to remove mildew and avoid allergy irritation is by ventilating properly.  Let your fan run at least 10 minutes after showering, definitely longer if you still see moisture on your walls.  Source: FoxNews

    Damaged Device Forensics

Steve: I have a few things to tell you. That when we first proposed this project to DHS, it was about two, two-and-a-half years ago, and then, at that point in time, there was really little industry penetration with drone forensics at that time. There was a couple of … University of New Haven had done some research, [06:13] out of the UK had done some research on drones, but there wasn’t vendor support at that time, and we just saw a gap that needed to be filled. At the same time, drones were coming over the border, they were landing at sensitive government locations, and they were showing up in labs. And labs were needing to know, “How do we get the data off of these devices?” Our approach for this project is to do a complete physical analysis on the consumer professional drones that were touching, and identification of all the available technical information that’s out there. So, if you go and pull our reports, as an example, that I’ll show you a cover image of, it has not only what we’ve found, but everything else we’ve found online about them. If somebody else has hacked them, if somebody else has done [teardowns], we want to make all of that available to you, so you can find it.

How to Make Bone Broth in the Instant Pot

I’ve made bone broth on the stove top and in my slow cooker for decades. It’s delicious, but it makes our house smell like a bone broth factory. Not good! I’ve solved this problem and now I want to help you too! That’s why I’m going to teach you how to make bone broth in the Instant Pot.

How to Make Bone Broth in the Instant Pot

Making bone broth in the Instant Pot is super easy. Feel free to skip the step of roasting the beef bones to make your beef bone broth. I roast them because it creates a deep rich flavor for the broth, and I don’t mind taking the extra time to do it.

Use an Acid to Make Bone Broth

I use apple cider vinegar in my bone broth recipe because the acid in the vinegar helps to release minerals and other nutrients from the bones. Don’t worry, you can’t taste the vinegar in the final product. This recipe is for beef bone broth. If you need chicken stock, see my post called How to Make Bone Broth from Chicken.

How to Make Bone Broth in the Instant Pot
      Servings3 quarts
      Ingredients
      Instructions
      1. Place beef bones on a baking sheet
      2. Roast at 350°F for 60 minutes
      3. Remove bones from oven and transfer to Instant Pot
      4. Place onion, garlic, bay leaf, vinegar, and salt in Instant Pot
      5. Fill the Instant Pot with water until just below the “max fill line”
      6. Put on the lid and lock to close
      7. Set to manual high pressure for 90 minutes
      8. Release pressure, then remove lid and allow to cool
      9. Strain mixture into 3 one quart mason jars
      10. Refrigerate for 4 days, or freeze for up to 6 months

      Pre-Heating the Instant Pot

The Instant Pot takes time to get to high pressure. If a recipe says cook for one hour at high pressure, give yourself an extra 10-30 minutes for the cooker to pre-heat. When the cooker says “on” but doesn’t yet display the time you entered it is pre-heating.

      How to Strain Bone Broth

I use the same bowl, strainer, and funnel every time I make bone broth and these tools work like magic! I often use the same beef bones several times. I throw everything back in the pot and add more vinegar, salt, and water. These extra batches are not quite as strong but still very good.

How to Freeze Bone Broth in Mason Jars

If you’re going to freeze your bone broth, do not fill the mason jars all the way to the top. Leave space for the broth to expand when it’s frozen.

How to Use the Instant Pot

If you’re still feeling overwhelmed, I have created a fantastic Instant Pot cheat sheet for you called How to Use the Instant Pot. It includes a handy chart explaining all of the buttons on the front of the Instant Pot. Many readers tell me they print it out and put it on the fridge.

      The Best Store-Bought Bone Broth

If you’re busy you can buy a fantastic bone broth product from Kettle & Fire. I like their beef bone broth, but am absolutely obsessed with their chicken broth and often drink it plain with a pinch of salt before dinner.

Easy Soup Recipes Made with Bone Broth

Here are some of my soup recipes that are incredible with homemade bone broth:

This post is an oldie but goodie from the archives. I first shared this recipe in February 2017.
