Shoulder Health: Where Small Hinges Swing Big Doors

The shoulder girdle is a complex series of joints unified by subtle movements in perfect timing. If you need proof, just check out this slide from my new release, Sturdy Shoulder Solutions.

This study looked at the difference between the empty can and full can in terms of both muscular recruitment and actual movement in folks with symptomatic impingement vs. healthy controls. Not surprisingly, the empty can exercise hurt more. Just looking at this picture hurts my shoulder (and my shirt is wildly fitting).

To me, though, that's not the most significant takeaway from these study results. Rather, take a look at some of the numbers included in their findings: 1-3 degrees (joint movement) and 1-4% (muscular activation). These are subtle, subtle quantifiable differences between those in pain and those who are pain free - and most of them really can't be perceived "on the fly."

What does this mean for how you assess, program, and coach?

First, from an evaluation standpoint, we have to truly understand what quality movement should look and feel like. If you can't truly define "normal," then how can you ever truly appreciate "abnormal?"

Second, not all exercises are created equal (as we learned from the empty vs. full can discussion).

Third, in coaching, we have to constantly solicit feedback from our athletes on where they feel exercises.

These are all key principles on which I focus in my new resource, Sturdy Shoulder Solutions - and it's on sale for $50 off through Sunday at midnight. You can learn more at www.SturdyShoulders.com.

Hopefulness

UnknownWhen it comes to policing in America, I have hope. It is hope, realistic hope, that keeps many of us who have served, retired, and now, keeps us “in the game.”

I was moved this week by a poem by Victoria Safford by that same name — Hope:

Our mission is to plant ourselves at the gates of Hope—
Not the prudent gates of Optimism,
Which are somewhat narrower.
Not the stalwart, boring gates of Common Sense;
Nor the strident gates of Self-Righteousness,
Which creak on shrill and angry hinges
(People cannot hear us there; they cannot pass through)
Nor the cheerful, flimsy garden gate of
“Everything is gonna’ be all right.”
But a different, sometimes lonely place,
The place of truth-telling,
About your own soul first of all and its condition.
The place of resistance and defiance,
The piece of ground from which you see the world
Both as it is and as it could be
As it will be;
The place from which you glimpse not only struggle,
But the joy of the struggle.
And we stand there, beckoning and calling,
Telling people what we are seeing
Asking people what they see.

In this poem, Stafford calls us to be truth-tellers; that often truth-telling is an act of resistance and defiance. This is a struggle that is often lonely as we, who work to improve the lot of those with whom we once served, tell them what we see, asking them what they see.

May 2018 Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver Statistics Package with Charts & Graphs

Reduced demand is allowing housing supply to accumulate

Home buyer demand continues to decline across the Metro Vancouver* housing market.

The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) reports that residential property sales in the region totalled 2,833 in May 2018, a 35.1 per cent decrease from the 4,364 sales recorded in May 2017, and a 9.8 per cent increase compared to April 2018 when 2,579 homes sold.

Last month’s sales were 19.3 per cent below the 10-year May sales average.

Vancouver May Housing Market

“With fewer homes selling today compared to recent years, the number of homes available for sale is rising,” Phil Moore, REBGV president said. “The selection of homes for sale in Metro Vancouver has risen to the highest levels we’ve seen in the last two years, yet supply is still below our long-term historical averages.”

There were 6,375 detached, attached and apartment properties newly listed for sale on the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in Metro Vancouver in May 2018. This represents a 5.5 per cent increase compared to the 6,044 homes listed in May 2017 and a 9.5 per cent increase compared to April 2018 when 5,820 homes were listed.

The total number of properties currently listed for sale on the MLS® system in Metro Vancouver is 11,292, a 38.2 per cent increase compared to May 2017 (8,168) and a 15 per cent increase compared to April 2018 (9,822).

The total number of listings available today is 17.2 per cent below the 10-year May average.

For all property types, the sales-to-active listings ratio for May 2018 is 25.1 per cent. By property type, the ratio is 14.7 per cent for detached homes, 30.8 per cent for townhomes, and 41.7 per cent for condominiums.

Generally, analysts say that downward pressure on home prices occurs when the ratio dips below the 12 per cent mark for a sustained period, while home prices often experience upward pressure when it surpasses 20 per cent over several months.

“For home sellers to be successful in today’s market, it’s important to price your property competitively given the shifting dynamics we’re experiencing,” Moore said. “It’s also important to work with your local Realtor to better understand these changing conditions.”

The MLS® Home Price Index composite benchmark price for all residential properties in Metro Vancouver is currently $1,094,000. This is an 11.5 per cent increase over May 2017 and a 0.2 per cent increase compared to April 2018.

Sales of detached properties in May 2018 reached 926, a 40.2 per cent decrease from the 1,548 detached sales recorded in May 2017. The benchmark price for detached properties is $1,608,000. This is a 2.4 per cent increase from May 2017 and a 0.1 per cent increase compared to April 2018.

Sales of apartment properties reached 1,431 in May 2018, a 29.3 per cent decrease from the 2,025 sales in May 2017. The benchmark price of an apartment property is $701,700. This is a 20.2 per cent increase from May 2017 and a 0.1 per cent increase compared to April 2018.

Attached property sales in May 2018 totalled 476, a 39.8 per cent decrease from the 791 sales in May 2017. The benchmark price of an attached unit is $859,500. This represents a 16 per cent increase from May 2017 and a 0.6 per cent increase compared to April 2018.

Green Goddess Dressing

With 6 ingredients total, my Green Goddess Dressing is a cinch to throw together. Like all my recipes, it’s super easy! Simply place everything in a blender, pureĆ© until smooth and you have the perfect keto salad dressing.

Easy Low-Carb Keto Salad Dressing

All you need to make this healthy low-carb salad dressing recipe is avocado, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, herbs de Provence, salt, and water. My boys adore it and I love that it’s an optimal recipe for the Ketogenic Diet. If you’ve gone low-carb, high-fat (LCHF) you’ll definitely want to take a look at my Keto Diet Recipes page for inspiration.

High-Fat Salad Dressing Made with Avocado

We eat Green Goddess Dressing over salads, and use it as a dip too. When served with chopped vegetables like cucumber, celery, and radishes it’s a healthy low-carb snack for a summer barbecue or in the winter, a lazy football Sunday. We also eat this keto salad dressing over fresh picked greens from our garden.

Avocados the Perfect Keto Superfood

I love avocados because they taste incredible and are full of  healthy fat. In fact, avocados are one of the richest foods on the planet with more than 70% of their calories coming from fat. Loaded with fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and folate avocados are not only delicious, they’re a fantastically healthy food. They also contain lecithin, a phospholipid that is very important for LCHF diets because it helps with the breakdown and absorption of fat.

Serving and Storing Green Goddess Dressing

If you want to thin out this dressing, just add a tablespoon of water at a time until you reach the desired consistency. Thick or thin, it’s incredibly healthy and delicious! I store this dressing in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Because avocados are best fresh, I don’t keep it for longer than this.

  1. Place all ingredients in a vitamix
  2. Process on high speed until smooth
  3. Pour over salad greens
  4. Refrigerate remaining dressing in a glass jar for up to 3 days

How Do You Pick a Ripe Avocado

My method for determining if an avocado is rip is to gently press the skin and feel how soft the flesh is. The softer the avocado is the riper it is. Hard avocados are not yet ripe and best left out on the counter to ripen.

This post is an oldie but goodie from the archives. I first published it in 2008.
