Alexander Pope, and 18th century English poet wrote in his “An Essay on Man,”
- Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
- Man never is, but always to be blessed:
- The soul, uneasy and confined from home,
- Rests and expatiates in a life to come.
It is a saying I have often used throughout the years when thinking about the future of policing in our country. I still remain hopeful.
Five events this week have contributed to my hopefulness:
- Retired Dallas Chief David Brown’s leadership and his recent comments and new book, Called to Rise.
- Houston Chief Art Acevedo’s efforts at organizational reform.
- Yale Law Professor Tracey Meares’ Vera Institute’s webcast on police reform and the importance of Procedural Justice in policing.
- The leadership development program, “Police For Tomorrow,” a collaboration between the Washington, D.C. Metro Police Department and Georgetown University.
- Former FBI Director Comey’s testimony and example of how to professionally act under pressure. Law enforcement leaders should pay attention to this lesson.
