Hope Springs Eternal

Alexander Pope, and 18th century English poet wrote in his “An Essay on Man,”

Hope springs eternal in the human breast;

Man never is, but always to be blessed:

The soul, uneasy and confined from home,

Rests and expatiates in a life to come.

It is a saying I have often used throughout the years when thinking about the future of policing in our country. I still remain hopeful.

Five events this week have contributed to my hopefulness:

1. Retired Dallas Chief David Brown’s leadership and his recent comments and new book, Called to Rise.
2. Houston Chief Art Acevedo’s efforts at organizational reform.
3. Yale Law Professor Tracey Meares’ Vera Institute’s webcast on police reform and the importance of Procedural Justice in policing.
4. The leadership development program, “Police For Tomorrow,” a collaboration between the Washington, D.C. Metro Police Department and Georgetown University.
5. Former FBI Director Comey’s testimony and example of how to professionally act under pressure. Law enforcement leaders should pay attention to this lesson.
