4 Stylish Window Treatments

Have you ever wondered about the best way to decorate your windows? If so, here are 4 of the most common styles of window treatments, including: curtain combos, plantation shutters, black and white, and mix and match style.

Curtain Combos
Valances provide a streamlined look by hiding drapery hardware. Designer Troy Beasley pairs a valance with cream panels trimmed in brown to add warmth to the bedroom while still letting in a little natural light. Source: HGTV

Plantation Shutters
“These are less window furnishings and more an architectural feature,” says Chrissie Jeffrey of No Chintz. Shutters are chic and smart, and allow light and air in while maintaining privacy. They’re good in situations where curtains might not fare so well, such as bathroom windows. Consider using them in a boy’s room, if a fabric option isn’t the right fit, or to disguise an ugly outlook. “Shutters let in a lot of light, so if you wanted to soften the brightness you’d be better going for a translucent roller blind,” advises Chrissie. “Shutters don’t provide full block out for sleeping, but are good light filters.” Shutters are adjusted with a tilt bar, positioned in the middle. Note that the name doesn’t mean they are produced from plantation timber – in fact, many modern shutters are often not made of timber – but it refers to a style of house that they
were found on. Source: InsideOut

Black and White
“I wanted it to look less boring and more like a smart butler’s pantry,” designer Lilly Bunn says of this New York City kitchen. The Roman shade is made from Holland & Sherry’s Belfour linen, and the existing cabinets are painted Benjamin Moore Aura in Black. Source: HouseBeautiful

Mix and Match Style
Be careful when selecting patterns. Window treatments that are too bold or busy can take away from other décor throughout the room. However, a simple print can bring a room to life. Be sure the pattern you choose creates the right balance.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to mix and match. If you have a room with floor-length windows or glass doors as well as a standard sized window or two, it’s okay to have different styles of treatments. For example, some homeowners may choose elegant drapes for the larger windows and simple Roman shades for the others. It’s okay to change up the style so long as the fabrics match. Paleo Passover Recipes

I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 1998 and went on a gluten-free diet. Although I followed it religiously, eating gluten-free wasn’t enough, so in 2001 I went on the grain-free diet and have followed it strictly ever since. All of the dishes in my books and on this website are grain-free recipes. Additionally, I don’t eat corn or potatoes, so all of my recipes are corn-free and potato-free.

As you can imagine, I’ve had decades of experience preparing grain-free and paleo Passover recipes. Since the requests are coming in a mile a minute, I’m sharing my gluten-free paleo Seder menu here. My Passover recipes will take your gluten-free Seder to the next level of healthiness!

Paleo Passover Recipes

Charoset
Maror
Gefilte Fish
Asparagus Basil Salad
Grain-Free Matzo
Matzo Ball Soup
Carrot Kugel
Chicken Marbella from Paleo Cooking from Elana’s Pantry
Paleo Coconut Macaroons
Orange Cake

I hope this menu will make the combination of being Jewish and following a gluten-free or grain-free diet much easier. If you’re not Jewish, feel free to enjoy these easy paleo diet recipes, which include grain-free classics such as my Paleo Matzo Ball Soup.

If you’re not all that familiar with preparing a gluten-free Seder, you’ll want to take a look at my Favorite Passover Ingredients post to get started!

This Paleo Passover Menu is an oldie but goodie from the archives, I first published it in 2012.

A Tip for Turning Off the Lats (Video)

The Back to Wall Shoulder Flexion is one of my favorite shoulder mobility exercises, as it forces individuals to learn how to integrate good core positioning with adequate overhead range of motion and stability. Unfortunately, some people struggle with really learning to shut the lats off to allow for proper overhead movement. Here's one strategy we like to employ:
