Register Now for the 6th Annual Cressey Sports Performance Fall Seminar!

We're very excited to announce that on Sunday, October 22, we’ll be hosting our sixth annual fall seminar at Cressey Sports Performance. As was the case with our extremely popular fall event over the past five years, this event will showcase the great staff we're fortunate to have as part of our team. Also like last year, we want to make this an affordable event for everyone and create a great forum for industry professionals and fitness enthusiasts alike to interact, exchange ideas, and learn. We're happy to have Perform Better as our official sponsor again this year as well.

Here are the presentation topics:

Pete Dupuis -- Gym Ownership In Hindsight: A Decade of Lessons Learned

After designing three different gyms, negotiating five different leases, and building a team of ten fitness professionals, Pete has an informed opinion on gym design and management. In this presentation, he'll introduce you to five of the best, and five of the worst decisions we've made along the way in ten years of operating Cressey Sports Performance.

Miguel Aragoncillo -- Improving Performance for Rotational Athletes

In this presentation, Miguel will analyze performance for rotational athletes, along with discussion on case studies and techniques as they relate to asymmetries, kinetic chains, and biomechanics. This two-part presentation will feature a lecture discussing the understanding the possible origins of dysfunction, and a hands-on component which will dive into a live assessment and exercise selection.

Chris Howard -- Low Back Pain: A New Perspective on the Same Old Problem

Nearly every fitness professional has encountered an athlete or client dealing with lower back pain. In this presentation, Chris will blend his experience of anatomy and muscular referred pain patterns with strength and conditioning and soft-tissue strategies to illustrate how he treats clients experiencing lower back pain. Whether you are new to strength and conditioning, or a seasoned veteran, you will see lower back pain from a new perspective following this presentation.

Nancy Newell -- Constructing Female Confidence in a Male-Dominated Gym

Some male coaches feel uncomfortable coaching female clients. They struggle to formulate an approach with which they're confident, and the client experience is often negatively impacted as a result. In this presentation, Nancy will help coaches learn how to “dance” the line between being awkward and awesome, while sharing her personal philosophy on how to build female confidence in a male dominated gym.

Eric Cressey -- How Posture Impacts Pain and Performance

Posture is one of the most controversial topics in the fields of health and human performance. In this presentation, Eric will look at the related research and present anecdotal evidence and case studies to bring some clarity to the debate on just how important having "good posture" - if it even exists - really is.

John O'Neil -- Foundational Strength: Laying Groundwork for the Untrained Youth Athlete

In this presentation, John will take a comprehensive look at how we acclimate our untrained youth athletes to the training process at Cressey Sports Performance. This information will include the technical and tactical aspects of executing training sessions in our semi-private group-training model.

Jordan Syatt - How to Build Your Own Successful Online Fitness Business

With this presentation, we kick off a new CSP Fall Seminar tradition: bringing back an accomplished former CSP intern to present from his/her realm of expertise. We're excited to have Jordan back for a no-nonsense open dialogue in which he fields your individual questions and outlines everything you need to know to make a name for yourself in the fitness industry while helping thousands of people all over the world.

**Bonus 3:00PM Saturday Session**

You’re Wrong, Mr. President, It’s Not Okay!

This is so wrong I can hardly contain myself! It’s wrong (and illegal) what the President said way “okay.” And it’s wrong that not one of these police officers stood up and said, “No, I am not going to do that, Mr. President, you are wrong, dead wrong!”

In my generation of police, I honestly believe that more than one of my colleagues would have challenged a president who said that. That’s what courage is. And courage is standing up for what’s right. Sadly, that was obviously lacking among the police present at Suffolk County Community College in the Town of Brentwood near Seldon, New York. A most shameful response from the men and women who have sworn to protect and serve us.

My dear friend and colleague, Capt, Cheri Maples, died yesterday from complications from a bike-auto accident she suffered a year ago. She was confined to a wheel chair during this time after a long time in the I.C.U. As a police officer, lawyer, and dharma teacher, Cheri would have stood up even if she was in a wheel chair. She was a radical and a rebel along the lines of what physicist and Nobel laureate Niels Bohr (1885-1962) described:

“Every valuable human being must be a radical and rebel, for what she must aim at is to make things better than they are.”

Now here’s what Pres. Trump said:

“When you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddywagon, you just see them thrown in, rough, please don’t be too nice. Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over? Like, don’t hit their head and they’ve just killed somebody. Don’t hit their head? I said, ‘You can take the hand away, OK?’”

He just told a group of police officers that it’s “okay” to commit a crime. If they do what he asked them to do, will he pardon them?

Mr. President, NO! We cannot and will not take the hand away. Okay?

This is a sad day for police in America.

Keto Lime Creamsicles

Made with 5 ingredients, Keto Lime Popsicles hit the spot when the heat is on! It’s been pretty toasty here in Boulder, Colorado, so cool, quick, and easy is at the top of the menu. All you need to make these Keto popsicles is coconut milk, avocado, lime juice, stevia, and vanilla powder. This sugar-free popsicle recipe has a rich creamy flavor that will knock your socks off!

This is the rare Keto-Vegan recipe, which is perfect for people on a high-fat low-carb (HFLC) diet, as well as those that don’t eat food made of, or by animals.

Making Keto Popsicles

Because Keto Lime Popsicles are made almost entirely of fat, the batter may be very thick. Don’t worry, this is completely normal and to be expected. If needed, use a spoon to help while you’re pouring the batter into the popsicle mold.

Keto Lime Creamsicles

I use stevia in this recipe so these sugar-free popsicles are not super sweet. If you’re not on a Keto Diet, or if you are and have a couple of carbs to spare, blend one tablespoon of maple syrup into the popsicle batter. You’ll be adding about 2 grams of carbohydrates per popsicle if you do. I serve the sweetened version to my family and save the popsicles that are purely stevia sweetened for myself.

Keto Lime Creamsicles

    Ingredients
    Instructions
    1. In a vitamix combine coconut milk, avocado, lime juice, stevia, and vanilla
    2. Blend until smooth
    3. Transfer mixture to a popsicle mold
    4. Insert popsicle sticks
    5. Freeze for 4 hours
    6. Serve

    Keto Diet Resources

The Ketogenic Diet is a diet that is high in fat and low in carbohydrates. It is commonly used in a clinical setting to treat neurological diseases such as drug-refractory epilepsy. For more information on the Keto Diet see my Keto Diet Recipes page.

You can eat quite a bit of junk food and artificial sweetener on the Keto Diet, but that’s not the way I follow it. In this recipe I use some of the healthiest fats around. Coconut milk contains medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s), and avocados are full of lecithin, a fantastic source of phosphatidylcholine. Lecithin is rich in phospholipids, a type of fat that helps other fats cross the barrier of the cell membrane in order to get into the cell. Phospholipids are essential to the body in the breakdown and assimilation of fat, and a key component in following a healthy Keto Diet.

    3 Bathroom Mistakes to Avoid

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Despite using the bathroom every day since you were born, you probably still make mistakes that you weren’t aware of. Check out these examples:

    Using toxic chemicals to clean
Let’s take a moment to think about the reason you’re actually cleaning anyway…to kill infection- and illness-causing bacteria, right? Then, you’ll be surprised to know many of the cleaning products you’re using could be harmful to your health. The Environmental Working Group has published a “Hall Of Shame” list of worst-offending cleaning products, many of which are banned in other countries and have ingredients known to cause cancer, blindness and more.
Instead, make your own green cleaner using fruit! A grapefruit cut in half with salt is an effective tub scrubber and a halved lemon will make the water stains on your faucets a distant memory. Not to mention, your bathroom will smell amazing. Source: HuffingtonPost

Flushing the toilet with the lid up
You pee, wipe, stand up, and just flush the toilet, right? It sounds basic enough. But flushing the toilet with the lid still up is a mistake, because there’s this thing called “toilet plume” you may not know about. “Toilet plume” is the mixture of small waste particles and water in your toilet that can shoot aerosolized feces as high as 15 feet into the air when you flush. Yuck, and no thank you.

A study conducted at the University of Oklahoma found that “toilet plume could play a contributory role in the transmission of infectious diseases.” Another study in 2012 at Leeds University discovered that a germ called C. difficile can be catapulted up to 10 inches above the toilet seat every time you flush with the lid open. By the way, C. difficile gives you nausea and makes you vomit. So, yeah, close the lid before you flush. Source: HelloGiggles

    Ignoring the floor
Your bathroom floor is dirtier than your toilet seat, according to ABC News. If you walk around in your bare feet, you’re going to pick up all kinds of bacteria (as many as 2 million per square inch). In fact, most people worry about the toilet seat, but never pay attention to the even more dangerous floor. So make sure your feet are covered instead of the toilet seat if you’re a germaphobe. Brandscaping and the Fitness Industry

When we are changing diapers, my 2-year-old daughters always request the ones with "Big Bird" on them. The images on the diaper don't change how effective it is at doing its job, of course.

And, if the paper towels don't have a picture of Olaf from "Frozen" on them, a temper tantrum might very well occur - even if any regular ol' paper towel would get the job done just as well.

They adore the Mickey Mouse sippy cups my mother bought them even though they aren't any better at delivering the beverage than a generic cup.

All of these are perfect examples of Brandscaping, a concept to which I was introduced by Andrew Davis in his outstanding book by the same name.

In its simplest form, brandscaping is an approach to developing partnerships with other brands who also cater to your target market. Davis spends considerable time discussing how Tony Bennett's resurgence in the past decade has a lot to do with joint ventures with Lady Gaga and the Muppets; they've modernized his classic approach to create a new synergy.

As an more applicable fitness industry example, Cressey Sports Performance (baseball strength and conditioning) and New Balance (baseball training apparel and shoes) are a great synergistic fit - and it even led to a limited edition training sneaker.

Referrals to and from physical therapists are another example, and the list could go on to include pitching instructors, massage therapists, meal preparation services, and a host of other complementary services. If we look at the classic "here's how you can grow your business," brandscaping is likely the single-best way to grow the "same product, new market" component. Your brandscaping partner recognizes your specific expertise/offering and brings new folks to it. You, in turn, do the same for them. Everybody wins.

Unfortunately, though, a lot of fitness professionals get in their own way and "obstruct" opportunities for brandscaping. A big mistake is definitely trying to be everything to everyone. If you're training everyone from cardiac rehab patients, to fitness competitors, to basketball players, to powerlifters, chances are that potential partners are going to struggle to see the specific realm in which you'd be a good partner. When you have a really broad collection of offerings, it's a challenge to market to them. The cardiac rehab patients might hate the internet, the fitness competitors love Instagram, the basketball players are on Twitter, and the powerlifters are on Facebook.

Moreover, some fitness professionals mismanage their web presence, even if they have a specific, marketable niche. As an example, if you train high school athletes, but a huge majority of your social media posts are about beer and partying, that's going to be a huge turnoff to their parents (who pay the bills). And, if you're a rockstar when it comes to training middle aged corporate executives, they're likely going to be turned off if all your social media content is shirtless photos of you from your recreational bodybuilding hobby.

In wrapping up, there are really three huge takeaways for you as you try to grow your business.

First, someone else has your ideal customers. Think about how you can partner with them in a mutually benefical relationship.

Second, your ideal customers or brandscaping partners might not be able to appreciate how good a cross-referral or co-banding relationship with you could be because you keep getting in your way. Think about the image you're creating publicly for your business or brand.

Third, don't let your two-year-old daughters boss you around like mine do to me.

Laminar Flow Cabinets And Data Recovery

In the previous article we wrote about Laminar Flow Cabinets and their basic definition. We also introduced our product – HDDS Horizontal Laminar Flow Cabinet M. The laminar cabinet engine draws air from the environment and directs it to the space where the filter is, which can be HEPA or ULPA. These filters have efficiency for stopping the particles with a diameter greater than 3 microns. Laminarity, i.e. the rectilinear parallel air flow at all points is provided by the perforated sheet that lies in front of the filter.

    3-Ingredient Strawberry Sorbet

My 3-Ingredient Strawberry Sorbet is the perfect healthy dessert for summer. All you need to make it is strawberries, water, and honey. Simply blend up those 3 ingredients and throw them in your ice cream maker to churn and chill. If you’re wondering how to make ice cream without an ice cream maker, see my quick and easy 2-Ingredient Banana Ice Cream recipe.

This easy sorbet recipe is loaded with wholesome strawberries that have numerous health benefits. Strawberries contain phytonutrients and flavanoids making this beautiful berry bright red. Full of potassium, magnesium, and vitamin C, strawberries reduce the risk of cancer. Strawberries are a low-glycemic fruit, full of healthy fiber and help to regulate blood sugar and decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

I use organic strawberries in my 3-Ingredient Strawberry Sorbet and all of my other strawberry recipes. This is important because conventional strawberries are heavily sprayed with toxic pesticides. I go out of my way to avoid everyday toxins because I have the MTHFR gene which can lead to impaired detoxification.

    3-Ingredient Strawberry Sorbet
      Servings4
      Ingredients
      Instructions
      1. Place strawberries, water, and honey in a vitamix
      2. Blend on highest speed until smooth and creamy
      3. Pour mixture into ice cream maker and process according to instructions
      4. Serve

If you’re looking for low-carb high-fat (LCHF) recipes you’ll definitely want to check out my Keto Diet page. The Ketogenic Diet can be very helpful in dealing with neurological disorders such as epilepsy. I was diagnosed with MS in 2006 and have found eating low-carb and Keto a useful strategy in reducing the symptoms of this disease.

Here are some of my other healthy strawberry recipes:

This post is an oldie but goodie from the archives, I first published this recipe in 2011.

Paraben’s IoT Support Increases To Cover The Amazon Echo With 1.4 Version

Paraben has been at the edge of innovation with the addition of support for IoT devices. Support started in Oct 2016 with DJI Drones support, and has increased with support for Android wearables, Fitbit, and Xbox gaming systems. With the 1.4 release of the E3 platform planned for the first of August 2017, the support of IoT devices will grow with Paraben releasing the first support for the Amazon Echo devices. “The support of these devices was crucial because of how foundational the Echo technology is in IoT devices. Over 8 million people now own an Amazon Echo device; Alexa is here to stay. We needed to make sure we supported not only the local smartphone App, but also dealing with the data in the cloud.” commented Amber Schroader, CEO of Paraben. 5 Decorating Tips for an Attic Bedroom Sanctuary

Attics are places that seem to be frozen in time, collecting dust and hiding forgotten family heirlooms. However, with some effort, it is possible to transform the underused space into a stylish, tranquil haven.

Below are 5 decorating tips for an attic bedroom sanctuary:

      Using Sloped Ceilings Properly
Use sloped ceilings wisely. “Dormers are great for window seats, desks or reading nooks,” says Heron. “These types of activities don’t require ceiling height, so where things are constricted, they provide extra function to that space.”
If you’re short on storage, built-in shelving is another wise use of the space where a sloped ceiling meets the floor. Source: Houzz

      Avoiding Overcrowding & Using Furniture
Speaking of furniture, since attics tend to be more cramped than other rooms you’ll want to avoid overstuffing your attic with bulky furniture. The fewer items you have, the better the flow will be. Choose furniture with a low profile since ceiling height could impede movement. Keep beds away from the lowest parts of the room so that nobody bumps their heads when getting in and out.  Another issue with a converted attic is that you often lose storage space. This is a problem since you also want to limit the amount of furniture in the attic. The answer is to incorporate storage into the furniture you have. Beds that have drawers beneath them, ottomans that have interior storage, and other multi-purpose pieces of furniture will help you achieve this goal without swamping the space. Source: Blog.ClubFurniture

      Picking Colors
The room paint is quite a challenge for the attic room. The reason behind this is simple, these kind of rooms have less walls and wide ceiling. It is important to do the paint work carefully so that you can make the room attractive. The trick is to use two different colours on the wall and the ceiling. Select white or neutral colour for the walls to make it bright. Source: HomeDecorXP

Making Use of a Ceiling Skylight
The attic is the perfect location for a skylight. Although it doesn’t strictly fall under the category of decorations, it’s a very practical project that will add to the appeal of your home. It will allow you to enjoy the great-looking night sky and cloud-gazing during the day right from the comfort of your new room. This will also save on electricity during the day as light will stream into your room and you won’t have to light up the place. There are many innovative options out there you can make use of during your projects. Source: ImproveNet

      Choosing Window Treatments
The attic was now ready for the gangly youth, but there was an important detail that needed to be incorporated with Window treatments ideas! Neighbors who’d had their home redone recently told us, the best option to find large varieties of the most effortless and effective window dressings is online shopping. This would also save us professional consultation and installation fees. Going through the online options had our eyes popping! The variety was amazing, but we soon educated ourselves enough to narrow the options down to two – Window Shutters or Cellular Shades. Though the cellular shades were cheaper and provided exemplary insulation, we decided to get the Woodlore Plus Norman Shutters as we felt it would be a more resilient option for clumsy teenage hands. Source: ZebraBlinds

      When Legal Choices Aren’t Moral

We would hope and expect the choices our police make are morally based.

In light of the grief and anger that has dominated if, how, and when police use deadly force, I must ask whether we have allowed our elected officials to sidestep the moral choices regarding this issue?

After all, we have seen city after city pay millions of dollars to the families of persons killed by their police.

We know all too well now how it works: a) police shoot and kill a threatening person because the officer feared for his or her life; b) The district attorney finds the use of force was legal according to the low standard of the USSC decision in Graham v. Connor (the use of force was “objectively reasonable”); c) The police undertake an internal investigation and find the officer did not violate department policies and acted consistent with the training the officer received regarding the use of deadly force.; d) After waiting for the government’s decision in the death of their loved one, the grieving family files a civil suit against the police officer and city. The jury hearing the case weights the testimony before it and finds in favor of the deceased person’s family based on a “preponderance of the evidence rather than the criminal standard of “beyond a reasonable doubt”). The jury then awards a large sum of money (which has recently ranged from $2 to $15 million).

But the city and its taxpayers do not pay the full monetary amount because the city carries liability insurance; therefore, millions of dollars become only thousands — and the system in place which caused the deaths of citizens at the hands of their government goes on without change or modification. Some elected official(s) must have decided it is easier to pay the money than change the police.

The policies, training, and practices of the police department go unchanged because the government feels justified; after all, didn’t their police follow the law and their training? — no foul, no violation, legal. But there is another side: Was the action by the police moral?

What is happening is that one group of people who work for the government determine the police have acted legally in these deaths while a number of citizen volunteers, serving on a jury, determine the officer acted improperly.

When we, the people, do not correct the wrongs and errors that happens in our system of policing and justice, we are part of the problem. The failure to correct a wrongful act is immoral; to act in a moral way is to act properly according to our principles.

In these decisions, a group of citizens have said their police did not conduct themselves in a moral way.

So, why don’t police change the way they are presently using deadly force? Why don’t they manage this problem and develop ways to reduce these deadly shootings?

      Safer Skincare

Recently I wrote about Safer Sunscreen and many of you reached out for my recommendations on Safer Skincare. Since I have the MTHFR genetic mutation it’s important for me to use non-toxic organic beauty products that are gentle and completely safe. Those with the MTHFR gene can have impaired detoxification so I’m very careful about what I put on my skin, as well as what I eat!

Like the rest of my life, my skincare routine is incredibly simple. I wear make-up every couple of months. I love a natural look and truth be told, I’m totally lazy when it comes to applying make-up, though if you’d like to see what’s in my extremely well organized makeup drawer, you’re welcome to take a peak!

Whether I wear makeup or not, I wash my face each night and apply layers of organic hydrating products. I’ve created a cleansing routine that is non-toxic and nourishing because feeding the skin with healthy ingredients is important at my age. I was born in 1967, you can do the math!

Below you’ll find my favorite non-toxic facial products, including cleanser, cream, and oil. These items will feed your skin and nourish your body. They’re free of endocrine disrupting chemicals, artificial fragrance, and other toxins.

      Face Cleanser

I love this Organic Herbal Choice Mari Facial Wash and use it every night to wash my face. It’s gentle and lightly scented which is perfect for my sensitive, dry skin.

Goddess Garden’s Fresh Start Gentle Cream Cleanser is another wonderful choice. It has a beautiful aroma with hints of mint, tea tree, and lavender. I don’t use it as an everyday product since I prefer to use more lightly scented cleansers on my face day-to-day, but I love using it now and then, as well as giving it to friends for birthdays and other occasions.

Once in a blue moon I’ll splurge on this Luzerne Facial Cleansing Creme, but not often since it’s extremely expensive. The upside of this wonderful product is that a little goes a long way and the container lasts for a very long time.

      Face Cream

Keeping my skin moist is a must so I use this Era Organics Complete Moisturizer every night after I wash my face. When I open the container I stir in a drop or two of Patchouli Essential Oil to create a light, purely natural scent. Feel free to experiment with other essential oils! I apply a thick layer of this heavy, soothing moisturizer while my skin is still damp, rubbing it into my face, neck, and décolleté.

Christina Moss Organic Facial Moisturizer is another wonderfully hydrating cream for delicate skin. Made with organic ingredients it contains star anise oil which gives it a mild licorice scent. This cream is very concentrated and a little goes a long way.

      Face Oil

I have very dry skin, as do most people who are vatas. Further, I live in the high dessert in Boulder, Colorado, an extremely dry climate. So, I love treating my face with hydrating Organic Jojoba Oil. After washing my face and applying face cream, I apply this smooth nourishing oil.

Giving my skin this extra layer of moisture has reduced fine lines around my eyes. In addition, drinking a couple of quarts of water per day, and following a Ketogenic Diet have also been incredibly helpful in slowing the ravages of time that befall middle aged women like me!

      Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen is another one of my favorite beauty tips. I use chemical-free zinc based sunscreens which I discuss in my Safer Sunscreen post. I only apply sunscreen to my face and neck since I want my body to absorb sunlight in order to naturally increase my vitamin D levels.

      Lip Balm

Wondering how to make lip balm? I have the perfect 3-ingredient recipe for you. Vanilla Butter Lip Balm is nourishing and hydrating. If making lip balm isn’t your thing, you’ll love this Super Lysine Stick.

Feed Your Skin, Feed Your Body

All of the products I use to protect and nourish my skin are free of substances that contain toxins. For example, many facial cleansers claim to be pure and non-toxic, but contain ingredients like ethylhexlyglycerin, a known eye irritant.

It’s so important to nourish your skin with pure ingredients that fight off free-radicals. Otherwise, you’re simply assaulting your system with harmful substances. If you’re eating clean, it only makes sense to feed your skin the same way, with food-like products that do no harm. After all, your skin is your largest organ and absorbs everything you put on it.

      Simplified Shoulder Solutions

I've devoted a lot of my articles to shoulder assessment, training, and programming over the years. Some have been lengthy articles (like my lat strain feature), others have been quick hit posts (like this bear crawl vs. crab walk one), and some have been video technique tutorials and common mistakes, like this:

When you've been at something a long time, the natural tendency is to chase increasing complexity. The more complexity you chase, the more novelty you encounter - and that novelty is what keeps folks engaged when they "specialize" in the same joint over an entire career. One thing I've done well in this regard is to chase complexity in my own education, but kept our application of these principles simple in the way we evaluate and coach athletes. Because, at the end of the day, this is what it comes down to:

Shoulder health is about keeping the ball on the socket. Period.
      Click To Tweet

Keep in mind that we're speaking specifically to the glenohumeral (ball and socket) joint, when in reality the entire shoulder girdle is comprised of many different articulations). As I mentioned, though, the point of this blog is to simplify this discussion.

There are a lot of factors that impact how well one is able to do that. It could be cuff strength, scapular control, ligamentous laxity, previous injury, bony changes, faulty thoracic positioning, tissue density, core control, and a host of other issues. These things all - in one way or another - impact how the ball and socket interact.

As strength and conditioning and rehabilitation specialists, you still need to understand the most common injuries incurred at the shoulder. You must appreciate population specific norms. And, you need to understand the assessments that determine whether static posture and movement quality are where they need to be. However, you should never get away from always bringing these concepts back to the fact that they all have to do with ball-and-socket interaction.

As Einstein once said, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." That's both the goal of this particular blog, and also my upcoming Shoulder Assessment, Corrective Exercise, and Programming seminar in New York City on August 20. Today is the deadline for getting the early bird registration rate, and I hope to see you there!

Also, I'll be delivering the same course near Washington, DC on September 17, if that's of interest. You can learn more HERE.

3 Tips on Keeping Your Bathroom Vanity Clean

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

One of the messiest places in most households is the bathroom vanity. It holds makeup, bathroom cleansers, toilet papers, and other personal stuff that are best kept clean. Use the following tips in order to keep this area neat and hygienic.

Decide on and prepare your vanity cleaner
Because there are so many different kinds of vanities (wood, glass, marble, laminate), you’ll need to find out what kind of cleaner your bathroom vanity requires. If you use the wrong kind of cleaner on your bathroom vanity, you may end up ruining it instead of improving its looks. Read the directions on the cleaner bottle to find out whether you can just put it straight on the vanity or if it needs to be diluted with water. If you take care and follow the directions, then you’re sure to get the best possible outcome. Source: Overstock

      Analyze your space
Now that you are ready to refill your cabinets, take a look at your space and decide where each item belongs. If there is something that you need frequently, like toilet paper or a hair dryer, keep those things within easy reach. Items that are used less often, like extra shampoo or cleaning supplies can be kept further back or on a lower shelf. You may want buy plastic containers to organize certain items, but if you like to save money, emptied ice cream buckets or sour cream containers work nicely too. Source: Cleaning.Tips

      Assess your need for more
…. storage that is. If your shelf, cabinet, or chest is too small for the items you’re trying to hold, it will always feel cramped and cluttered. If your space won’t hold additional storage, try finding a place elsewhere in your home to hold things that don’t have to be stored in the bathroom. Try keeping medicine in the kitchen, or even in a plastic tub under your bed. That way, when you reach for the toothpaste, nothing will fall out on you! Source: ApartmentTherapy

      Police Like a Security Guard?

There is, unfortunately, a big difference between police services in a gated community and those delivered in most of our nation’s cities. There is difference is in support, trust and safety.

Those who have the most contact with police (poor neighborhoods) seem to have the least amount of support and trust. Many residents do not feel safe in their homes. Too often, we hear people of color say their neighborhoods are unsafe and over-policed.

I don’t hear the same kind of things from those who live in gated communities.  Gated communities are those wealthy neighborhoods we’ve all seen from outside their walls who have the means to construct barriers and hire guards to patrol and control access to their communities.

After Arrested Development was a published in 2012, I was invited to co a number of service clubs to talk about the book. When I presented the problems I saw developing in policing — the Four Obstacles:anti-intellectualism, violence, dishonesty, and disrespect. Most of those present were simply puzzled by the idea that all police were not loved and respected. After all, they had never encountered aggressive, disrespectful police. “We don’t understand. Police do a great job in our neighborhoods — although most of us have never had a recent contact with any of them.”

During the same period of time,in other neighborhoods, I heard from community activists and young people of color. When I asked them the same question about contacts with police, a lot of hands went up and the stories that followed troubled me.

The more vocal young people in these groups said they wanted community control of their police. They simply felt they had no ability to what they believed was an extremely negative situation. Community control of police is not a new idea to me. I often heard this expressed when I was a street cop in Minneapolis during the late 60s from those who felt powerless when it came to asking police to be fairer and more respectful.

Seeking to control the government who had power to arrest you and put you in jail was one of the objectives of our Founders. That’s why we have a Bill of Rights still in effect today.

If you observe the residents of any gated community in America today they are doing just that — assuring personal safety and managing authority. They have means, an elected resident council, and will actively be involved in selecting, directing and controlling their private police. If one of their teenage children misbehave in their community they will be chastised and taken home — not arrested and placed in juvenile detention overnight. How long do you think gated community residents would tolerate an abusive or disrespectful guard? Not for a moment! Why? Residents and their guests expect, yes demand, their security personnel accommodate their needs and are respectful to them and their children at all times. Period.

Should it be any different in a poor community? Can public police act in ways that are accommodating and respectful to those who have few means and power? There is a way. I maintain that the true practice of Community-Oriented Policing (COP) will provide this kind of outcome. I have seen it work and it is possible. I never received a complaint that one of my Neighborhood Officers was disrespectful or used excessive force. Why? Because the officer and community had build relationships with one another. Moreover, the neighborhood officer knew that his or her success (and even personal safety)in that community depended on building strong, respectful and collaborative relationship with residents.

They came to share the same community goals and agreed how they were to be pursued. This might be shocking to some readers, but even the most troubled and dangerous neighborhoods are populated with a majority of people who desire safety and order. They want their neighborhoods to be safe for their children. I hope we are at a time in our nation’s history that we understand we cannot arrest ourselves out of our urban problems. We can, instead, work together – police and community members – to find solutions.

The problem is that most police departments are not prepared to police in this manner. Sure, they have a community policing “program,” but it’s not how they operate department-wide day to day. You can’t get the neighborhood focus you need from officers who not trained to think this way and, instead, rotate in and out of neighborhoods driving high-powered and equipment-laden patrol vehicles with a “them versus us” attitude.

There’s an old song from the musical, “The Music Man” about how “you gotta know the territory!” That should apply to police as well as door-to-door sales persons. Knowing your neighborhood is essential to the delivery of quality police services.

This has been a long journey for me stretching back far too many years. Yet, I am not ready to give up. I still think the heart and soul of successfully policing a diverse city is for police to get back to the roots of true COP as we once intended years ago; in fact, towards the end of my career I stopped calling it COP and referred to what I was trying to achieve was Neighborhood Oriented Policing (NOP), because COP was misunderstood and lost its effectiveness when became a program and not the way, and the only way, to deliver police services in America.

When I look back, those men and women whom I assigned to troubled neighborhoods knew who they were and what they needed to do. Dallas Police Chief David Brown recently reminded us at the end of his career that policing is a “people business.” That’s so true. And when you are in the “people business” you know on whom you focus and build your relationships. When that happens we come closer to achieving the goals of our society.

Put the right police officers, with the right training and leadership in the most troubled neighborhoods and you will be surprised at the positive things that will happen. By “right” I mean police officers who are emotionally mature, and understand their role as guardians and protectors of that community. In addition to being mature and well-trained, they need to control their use of force, be honest, caring and willing to work solving resident-defined problems.

American policing has been on a slippery slope since the start of this century. Sometimes I think something terribly has gone wrong, Police in America have become over militarized in attitude and action. They have been misled into wars against crime and drugs and now immigrants and terrorists have been added. At the beginning of each of these wars, their leaders told them that arrest and force was the way to win instead of working closely with community members. Our police have been trained and equipped to be soldiers only to find many people now see them as soldiers of occupation. And we know from history that occupying forces never won a war. Occupiers always have to go back home, disgruntled and defeated. It doesn’t have to happen here. Sir Robert Peel knew this long ago when he and others organized the first public police in London in 1829. He declared, “police are the people, and the people are the police.” When we understand this things will get better.

Today’s police officers have a right to be angry. They have been duped into believing excessive force and military-like operations in our city neighborhoods work. It’s going to take courage from them to stand up and say, “We’re not going to do it this way anymore!” When they do that they will become “outliers.” But when enough outliers challenge a dysfunctional system, the outliers become the insiders. Change will come; but it will come slowly. So, why not start now? Officers, you know what you need to do.

Increasing Regulatory Burden on UK Pharma Fuels Need for E-Discovery Solution

AccessData just released a new white paper that discusses the growing litigation risks and regulatory pressures on UK pharmaceutical companies and the need for technology solutions to e-discovery. The management of electronic data is a complex and time-consuming challenge for corporate legal executives in any industry. These challenges are especially acute for UK companies in the pharmaceutical industry where corporate executive teams are faced with managing electronic data that resides on email servers and other data repositories. Pharmaceutical companies face an even greater e-discovery challenge when it comes to harvesting data from restricted information sources such as clinical trial records, adverse reaction findings and highly confidential sales analysis reports. The challenges are great but the technology is there. This white paper details key strategies to help pharmaceutical executives better manage their e-discovery responsibilities. Is Chocolate Allowed on the Ketogenic Diet?

You may be wondering, is chocolate a keto food? Or, is chocolate allowed on the Ketogenic Diet? Well, it depends. First, some background on the Keto Diet.

Why I Went on the Keto Diet

I went on the Keto Diet in 2014 and have found it gives me more energy than a high-carb diet. I think more clearly and I feel great eating keto. I love low-carb high-fat living. For me it’s the way to go. My diet consists of a good amount of fat and protein along with a small amount of carbohydrates that I get primarily from vegetables. For some fun ideas on replacing high-carb grains in your diet with low-carb vegetables, see my Healthy Low-Carb Swaps for Noodles post.

Multiple Sclerosis and the Keto Diet

I was diagnosed with MS in 2006. I’ve found that the Keto Diet has been helpful in stabilizing the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Studies show that a Ketogenic Diet can increase the production of brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF), an anti-inflammatory protein that promotes the growth of nerves.1

      What is the Keto Diet?

You may be wondering, what is the Keto Diet? The classic Ketogenic Diet has three to four times as much fat as protein and carbohydrates combined according to the Charlie Foundation. A modified Keto Diet contains ratios of 2:1 and 1:1. What does this mean? In terms of macro-nutrients, a 2:1 keto meal would have around 60 grams of fat, 20 grams of protein, and 10 grams of carbs.

When I went through the hassle of weighing all of my food and following a very strict Keto Diet, I used a 1.5:1 ratio of fat to protein + carbohydrates. I no longer weigh everything I consume because I enjoy eating a bit more intuitively and don’t like counting macro-nutrients.

      The Charlie Foundation

After much research on the Ketogenic Diet, I fine tuned my knowledge of it under the tutelage of the amazing folks at the Charlie Foundation, a non-profit that promotes the use of the Ketogenic Diet in the clinical setting as a non-pharmacological treatment for epilepsy.

Is Chocolate Allowed on the Ketogenic Diet?

Every now and then I want a treat. That’s where chocolate comes in! My favorite Keto Diet treat is Green & Black’s 85% Chocolate Bar. This is not a sponsored post. I’ve simply fallen in love with this organic chocolate product. Why? Because it’s a healthy low-carb dessert that tastes fantastic and is made of organic chocolate, without soy!

So, is chocolate a keto food? Well, Green & Black’s 85% Chocolate Bar contains more fat than protein and carbohydrates combined. Technically, it is a 1.1: 1 Ketogenic Diet food.

      Is Dark Chocolate Healthy?

Dark chocolate is made of cacao, one of the most antioxidant rich foods on the planet. Cacao contains a high level of polyphenols which combat oxidative stress in the body. When consuming chocolate, regardless of the diet you follow, it’s important to eat dark chocolate. Why? Because dark chocolate contains more cacao and less sugar than milk chocolate or semi-sweet chocolate. I use anywhere from 70% to 100% dark chocolate in my recipes. The higher the percentage of cacao the better!

Can You Eat Sugar on the Keto Diet?

Some of you may also be wondering, can you eat sugar on a Keto Diet? The answer to that is yes. But everyone is different, and like the Paleo Diet, there are many ways to follow the Keto Diet. The most important thing? Customize your diet and do what’s best for you.

Here are some of my incredible Keto Chocolate Dessert Recipes that use different types of chocolate!
